Interchange of sidekick computer into sammi?

Will the engine computer from an 89 Sidekick (1.6L 8V) swap into an 91 sammi (1.3L)?

Ok.... just to clarify..... WHY?? How much different are they? Looking under the hood.. both seem to be VERY similar.

Anybody got any real information on this?

Re: Interchange of sidekick computer into sammi?

There are people are trying using 1.3 FI setups to run 1.6 8V, If the ports match up the same just try it and see what happens. I would be willing to be the brain box ecm thing would not be compatible though.

Re: Interchange of sidekick computer into sammi?

IN:

Electrical systems, unlike mechanical systems are often not compatible or easily adaptable between different engines.

The ECM in an 1.6 8v is custom programmed specifically to work with the 1.6 engine and it's throttle body. It knows that the engine has a specific displacement (and specific air-fuel mixture characteristics).

Further, (& this is without any knowledge of the wiring Kick/Tracker wiring harness) the pinouts on the 1.3 and 1.6 ECM may be different - something that would cause serious incompatibility.

I can pretty much guarantee you that a 1.6 TBI ECM will NOT work with a carbureted 1.3 (I know, the 91 Sammy has a TBI -- just trying to keep the confusion down amonst the newbies with carbed sammys) because of the vast differences in the mechanical setup between a TBI and a carburetor system.

One way you could find out more about ECM compatibility would be to compare the ECM wiring diagram from a '91 Samurai Factory Service Manual and an 89 Sidekick Factory Service Manual. If they match pin-for-pin in function, it MAY (that's MIGHT...) be somewhat interchangeable. But I wouldn't try it unless I was in the middle of nowhere needing an ECM and there was an abandoned '89 sidekick in the ditch by the side of the road.

Re: Interchange of sidekick computer into sammi?

I read in another post that the two computers have the same plug ins. I have a tracker and a 90 efi sami, I will be doin the 1.6 swap and I would like to know if anyone has tried this, you know just to see what would happen. Using the sami's wiring harness, plug it into the track/kick computer on a 1.6l motor, in a sami. I know people say it won't work, but just want to hear it from someone who has tried it. Let us know

Re: Interchange of sidekick computer into sammi?

There's an easy way to tell - try it. If smoke comes out that means they aren't compatable.

Secret: All electrical components have smoke packed in them, once the smoke comes out, they don't work.

To be safe, compare wiring diagrams, the inputs and outputs to the ECM's. If they are the same inputs/outputs it may work, but calibrations may still be way off.

Easy way, check parts numbers at a good parts house to see if they call out different numbers.

I have a funny feeling that they are the same ECM. There are many cars that use the same Mitsu****ty ECM that comes in the Sammy 1.3L, yet have different powerplants.
