Re: Best year for Zuk?

There are not a lot of significant differences between the years of Samurais. The 1990 and newer models have throttle body fuel injection and the earlier models had Hitachi ECM controlled 2 bbl carburetors. All had 1.3 liter engines and 5 speeds. The 1986-1988.5 models were sold in much larger volume and are more common than the later models.

Re: Best year for Zuk?

Not sure about the years, but 84-85 had the leaf springs inline with the frame, so if you wanna built Buggy leafs, its really easy for the rear. I also had the impression the diffs of those years were a little bit narrower (1 or 2" total) . Anybody can confirm those things, I'm not sure...

Re: Best year for Zuk?

howdy,
i have an 88, 88.5 JX, and a 91. the 88.5 JX is my baby, with the use of parts off the other two. i perfer the carb over efi. but this is my .02 cents, and i can only rely on my own thoughts and mishaps.

Not sure exactly what makes the difference between the years for building a rockcrawler but I have owned and DRIVEN both EFI and carbed models. For me EFI is the way to go for sure!

Re: Best year for Zuk?

The pre86's were known as sj410's, they had the springs inline and a 12% lower x/fer. I believe they only had a 1.0L motor though. The post 88.5"s had a lower 5th gear bad if you have low x-fer gears or something and you use if for daily driving. The 90's had FI these seem to be pretty rare at least here in Oregon. Also Suzuki stretched the wheelbase an inch or two when they went to FI.

Re: Best year for Zuk?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm thinking of replacing the 4Runner with a Suzuki that will become highly modified. So I guess what I'm after is the model with the largest engine bay, strongest frame, widest body etc. I don't know much about these vehicles, but there doesn't seem to be much difference between the models to me. Anyway, the info you guys have given me is excellent and if you can think of any more, I'd like to read it.

Thanks

Re: Best year for Zuk?

As far as body and frame design, nothing has changed. All body styles from 82 to present are the same. What are your plans? Motor? Axles? Suspension? I would look for the best bang for your buck. Get something older that is in good shape and build from there.

Re: Best year for Zuk?

IMHO, a 1995 would be the best year. It's the last year they made them, has EFI and came with no rear seat, making mods to the rear bed even easier.

Plus, it's always nice to have the last year of any vehicle.
