Poor Sami wont stay running. Please Help

Ok a friend at work has an 88 Sami with 1.3L that will not stay running. I thought I would throw this question at the Sami experts. Hereís all the low down, as I know it.

Truck starts find when cold and will run @ 2000 RPMís.
When it warms up it dies.
Put it into gear and try and drive, it dies.
He must pump the gas to keep it running between 2000 to 3000 rpmís or it dies

Things he has changed: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump and filter. All done after the problem started.

I havenít looked at the thing myself, but it sounds to me like a carb problem or a dead cylinder.

If any of you guys have experienced this problem, Please advise.

Re: Poor Sami wont stay running. Please Help

has he changed the O2 sensor?
mine did that and found out that it was the sensor,,, $35 for a Boche and it was still going pretty darn good 8 years later...
when he does change it, if that is the problem, he may need to run some cleaner through it to get the crap/buildup out of the engine...

how many miles are on his samurai?

Re: Poor Sami wont stay running. Please Help

Had pretty much the same problem with mine.

I replaced the carb, went with a weber conversion. That cleaned the problem right up. Would have rebuilt the carb, but couldn't get the dang thing apart. All the screws holding it together were stuck real good.

Also had to get the gas tank dipped as it had a significant amount of rust in it. That may have been the source of the problem as I was getting particles in the carb even after putting in a new fuel filter.

These are the sort of problems that drive ya crazy. It's probably not a dead cylinder - it'll still run on 3 and get around (I did for several months). It is probably a carb or fuel related problem. Check all the hoses for vacume leaks, and give the carb a good cleaning. Also check air/fuel mixture.
I'm finding I have similar problems due to dirty/rusty junk floating in my gas tank. I may be replacing that someday. .
As was discussed on a previous post, the "Mexican tune-up" may help diagnose the problem, but not cure it. - With engine running, place hand over the open carb and completely choke it out, it will die. That suction may pull thru any debre or dirt particles in the carb or line. Restart and see if it acts any better.

Make sure his choke isn't staying closed. When I screwed up the choke on my weber it ran great at idle then as soon as I would get on the road it would start dieing, bucking. Stop and let it idle and it would go back to normal.

Re: Poor Sami wont stay running. Please Help

given the symptoms, I'd say either a blocked idle jet, or a non-functional idle solenoid. the fact that its only when warm, and only at low idle isolate it to that one circuit in the carb.

have you / your buddy got a tear down diagram of the carb?

Mine used to do that, and we found the carb crapped out on it. I replaced it with a Pony andd have been extremely happy ever since.
