410 Backing Plate & Bearing install ??

I'm in the process of installing new rear axle bearings & the 410 backing plates. I read in a write up by Larry Harris on the offroad.com site that the bearings have one side that is larger as well as the (chamfered) retainers. The bearings I have are the same on both sides. Am I missing something here? Any ideas?

As copy/pasted from the write up.......

"Install the bearing on to the axle shaft. The bearing has a larger section on one side. This must face the axle hub.
Install the bearing retainer. The retainer has a chamfered edge that also must face the axle hub."

I just want to be sure I have it right before the bearings and retainers are pressed on.... Thanks!

Re: 410 Backing Plate & Bearing install ??

There should be a lip on the inner race that acts as a spacer to keep the bearing off the backing plate. If the bearing doesn't have it, then there should be a small spacer, about 3/16" wide , included with the bearing. The chamfer on that spacer goes towards the wheel, and is designed to miss the weld area on the axle end plate. Hope this helps,
Sarge

If it aint broke , I can still fix it...

Thanks Sarge! I've got the separate spacer/bearing setup. There was the reference to the retainer being chamfered on one side, but on the retainers I have, they're the same on both sides. Any problem with that? This seems simple enough, but I've been fooled before....
