HELP : LSDs + FWH = Judders !!!

I run a 95 Vitara (Sidekick/Tracker) with Limited Slip Differentials front and rear which were sourced from a breakers here in the UK, and originally came off a special edition X-EO model. When fitting the LSDs, I also fitted front free wheeling hubs so that the front LSD would not be in use all the time and to save on fuel consumption...

My problem is, at slow speeds and sharp cornering I cut a juddering effect from the front wheels. It seems to be that the rear LSD has such a force to it that it pushes the front tyres so much that they judder across the road! This does not occur when the free wheeling hubs are engaged though? I can only think that the drive shafts and front differential being engaged reduces the effect?

So, two questions...

1) Should I be running FWH with LSDs? Any reason why not?

2) What oil should I use in the LSDs? It also occured that using the wrong oil in the rear LSD would effect the "slip" effect and make it more of a locker that an LSD... any ideas what oil I should be using? It's currently got Valvaline Durablend GL-5LS in it which says it's for use in LSDs. A local specialist said I should use Mobilube SHCLF75W90 instead. Would the oil make so much difference to the performance and slip characteristics of the LSD?

I would rather run the FWH if at all possible to reduce the wear on the (rare) front LSD and to also save on fuel consumption...

Pictures and Spec of my truck on my website if anyones interested : http://www.k9rdj.co.uk

Thanks in advance!

Hey Dave!

I made it back from Mexico!
Too bloody beautiful!
Snorkeling drunk is fun!

Sorry your LSD's are fighting you! I'm almost convinced that ARB air lockers will be the path I take (eventually). I got a second job doing freelance writing for a local newspaper at $100 a pop every week, and that money will go 100% to upgrading the Sidekick!

Cheers,
Bob

Re: HELP : LSDs + FWH = Judders !!!

Got a reply through the Yahoo Sidekick and Tracker board suggesting ringing Calmini and asking them, so I did, and they say I'm running the correct sort of oil but should consider using an additive called Staylube Equitorx LSD Additive...

Just thought I'd repeat it here incase it helps anyone else...

Cheers all!

dparker,

You're not alone. Many GV's do the same thing. Check the GV Yahoo! Groups and ask. Many have the problem. Comes in at around 62mph and leaves around 70mph.

Gremlins, I tell you, Gremlins.

I would recommend checking with the manufacturer of the LSD. I know that my japanese LSD in an FJ40 required a certain friction modifier additive.

Are you sure the hubs are put in correctly? It seems as though they are not fully releasing. Also, remember that this is a world wide web. A breaker yard is a junk yard here. You might have more luck with breaker(junk)yard in your text. Cheerio mate!

Re: HELP : LSDs + FWH = Judders !!!

My Tracker was a 2000 and it had the same vibration, I think it started at about 61 and went through to about 66. That was the worst rig I ever had. The rear main went out at 20,000 miles, the calipers went bad at 30,000, the steering wheel locked up on my wife when driving down the road, the top started leaking and caused the dome light to short out, The ignition switch locked the key in place, Sway bar came loose and made all kinds of noise. I got rid of it at 37,000 miles No way was I gonna start paying for that stuff.

Well it didn't look THAT deep! Hold on I'll tow you out I'll get my jeep only strap.
