90 Sami EFI onto 88 sami

This should be a piece of cake for you wiz's. I couldnt find any post about this swap.
ALl i wann do is take the 90 efi and put it on my 88 samurai. Unfortionaly the 90 has no title and ive already done a bunch to my 88 so its just as easy to keep goin on the 88.
What do i need to change? it cant be to hard

Re: 90 Sami EFI onto 88 sami

No one has mentioned it yet, but if you have an early '88 you will also have some wiring incompatability problems with your instrument clusters on both rigs after you swap harnesses to convert to efi. If it's an '88.5 that will not be an issue. The wiring circuitry on the round vent dash clusters is a little different than the square dash clusters and there are one or two connectors that are different under the dash.

And if you swap dashes too you'll have the VIN without a title on the Zuk with efi again.

Sounds like it would be easier to swap VIN number plates off the dashes and then put the neat stuff on the '90 if that motor is good.

Re: 90 Sami EFI onto 88 sami

The problem I ran into with the dash clusters was the circuit board that is built into the cluster is laid out just a little differently and even if you changed the position of the wires in the connectors on the harness some things still would either not make a complete circuit or would cause something else to malfunction or even work backwards.(bright light indicator, idiot lights, tachometer, etc)

I am not saying that you can't make the gauges work, but the clusters are not a direct plug in swap.

Re: 90 Sami EFI onto 88 sami

I swapped the EFI off a 92' to my 87'. Swapped the complete wiring harness, computor, guage cluster, fuel tank, fuel supply line into the 87'. Need to remove the check valve(think thats what its called) on the return line. The 87 return line was a little smaller than the 92', but have not had any trouble. I was able to use the 92 cluster, but I also removed the stock dash, heater etc from the 87'. Going with a flat dash.

Re: 90 Sami EFI onto 88 sami

I have a lot better low end than i did with the carb.
It runs perfect going up or down steep climbs.
Would I do it again.......you bet. No hesitations, just good/strong throttle response
Brent at Trail Tough is suppose to be able to modify the early guage cluster to use with the EFI
