When installing primary clutch shims, which side of the spring do you put them on? Towards the engine or towards the outside? What is the most shims you can put without causing coil bind? (1993 Yamaha Phazer, YXR clutches). I've installed a heavier spring with 2 shims and I'm only engaging at 3200-3300 rpm's. I'd like to be engaging at 4000 rpm's. Any suggestions?
you said a heavier spring, they have an engaugement pressure and compressed pressure and rate. did you check the engaugement pressure? this is what counts, and you want to keep the compressed pressure at or near factory if your not going to change weights. i wouldn't go any more than 2 shimms, you weaken the spring too quick if you go more.
You can use three shims with out any problem with the spring bottoming out. Put the shims toward the motor, on the right side of the spring. HPE makes a high engagement orange spring $17.85. You can also notch the weights for higher engagement. I would recommend have somebody who knows how to do it help you. GOOD LUCK
