94 XLT Pull Starter-Help pls!

Went out to start my XLT and there was no resistance to the pull starter! The rope just pulls out and doesn't turn the motor over. Last time I started it it didn't sound too good (it clanged 2-3 times, and then started), and now nothing! I'll be pulling it apart this afternoon to see what the problem is, but this is my first time doing this. If you have any tips/pointers/advice to offer I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

There is a spring loaded dog that flips out to engauge the crankshaft which sounds like your problem, I would suggest you get a drawing of how it all goes together from your dealer. He can print off the parts drawing for you.

Thanks, I'll be headed over there in a minute. I got it off and it looks like I'm missing the nut on the end that holds the plastic piece on. I also made the mistake of taking out the big round spring...having a helluva time trying to get it back in place.

Thanks again,
Andrew

I've seen what you have, a little blue lock tight may prevent that the next time. The washer under that nut is copper and does not get lubed, it is supposed to give a little friction to the plate so it will flip the dog out to engage the crank... learned that one after about a dozen tries.
