84 polaris carb adj

I have 84 Polaris 400 Indy and I was wondering if anyone might know how many turns the mixture screw should come out on the carbs. I would be greatful for any help as this is my first sled. The main problem is that I do not get the same throttle response each time out. The idle seems high. I have replaced the fuel filter.

Re: 84 polaris carb adj

Can't find anything for 84 Indy 400 in the shop manual but there is a listing for 85. Idle rpm for 85 should be 2200, operating rpm should be 7800 plus or minus 200 rpm, air screw out 1 turn, pilot jet is 35. Std main jet was 220 which covered you from 1-3000 feet @ -20F to +20F. Idle is actually higher on this machine than the new ones. They are about 1600 now so if you are comparing them to new ones it will be higher. Also in 1986 and up they changed to a different carb setup with different needle jets, jet needles and pilot jets so maybe there was a reason for the change.
