Is a 98 Formula 500 a good sled?

I am interested in buying a 1998 skidoo formula 500 by trading my 95 zr440 snopro because I am tired of fixing-riding-fixing-fixing and then maybe riding some more.
Is it a good sled and will it beat a ZR 500 efi? thanks

Re: Is a 98 Formula 500 a good sled?

i got a form 98 form 500 on spring break and it has been a very good sled. its got bout 6000km on it and nothing major wrong with it. I put on and 1.25 track which makes it a much better sled and only effects top speed by about 7-10km/h. Right now top speed is about 135km/h with the track.
It will kill a zl5 off the line (and quite a few others) but it won't match the top end. Also I suggest something other than the rather poor steel skis. The powervalves also need to be checked once and a while if you don't use synthetic. I beleive if you wanted more top you could screw out the red center of the rave valve cover, letting your valves raise up higher because of less spring pressure on them. I have heard this but never tried it. I guess it might work in reverse too. All in all a good sled. Compared to a zl you'll be doing less wrenching.

The Ski-Doo will out handle the ZR, as far as adjusting the RAVE valves (the red screw ) I would not recomend it unless you really know what your doing.

I bought a formula 500 new in 98. Its a great machine 3000kms without a single problem. You are able to work on this machine very easily. The engine has alot of pull for a 500,I think you would enjoy the ride as well! Keep the carbs and rave valves clean!

Re: Is a 98 Formula 500 a good sled?

i don't see how it could out handle a ZR,maybe a ZL.i've got both and the ZR REALLY handles awsome.its a ditch banger and it does it VERY well, corners like its nobodys busness and excelerates pretty darn good.BUT i have never ridden a fromula 500 either,i've ridden a 95 mach 1 (670)that handeled like a bull, but had excellent exceleration.the ZL or ZR 500 motor is VERY reliable and very powerful, the 600 can be questionable(98). but if its a sled and ridable thats ALL that counts.good luck, and happy trails!
