Setting up carb for a 1977 Artic Cat Cheetah 500

I'm having a problem adjusting my 1977 cheetah carb. I went through the owners manual and followed all of the adjustments for the slide, pilot jet, and the choke. The machine is running well at normal operating speed but cuts out when I let off to idle. I tore the carb down and cleaned all of the ports but cannot correct the problem. I had a problem with the muffler the neck broke off so rather than put 2 bills into an old machine I welded heavy wall pipe to the muffler and fabricated a a flared end of an auto muffler pipe as a slip joint and clamped it. I was wondering if the slight restriction of the exhaust gas could cause the idle problem.
