97 Indy Lite-won\'t start

I have a 97 Indy Lite that refuses to start and stay running. When it starts it has a hard time staying running and wants to bog out and stall. I thought it may be an air issue, removed air box, all is clean. Removed fuel filter and bypassed running fuel line into jug. checked plugs and spark, ok. I am a diesel mechanic so this 2 stroke stuff is a little new to me. If this were a truck I would say the fuel system is "sucking air".
Any ideas of what to look for would be appreciated. Also, what is the square "manifold" that is in the main fuel line and then feeds the carbs?

turned out to be a carb problem, bowls were full of debris causing floats to stick. cleaned and reassembled carbs, runs like a champ now.

Glad to hear you got it running. The object you are talking about in the main fuel line is the fuel pump.

You will want to check to make sure your jets are clear. If your carbs were full of debris, make sure your secondary jets are not clogged. If they are, you will melt the machine down in no time. On my carbs (Polaris 79,80,89,92 & 95) this jet is located down a little hole next to the main jet. I have melted down 2 engines because the secondary were clogged.
