Riding in the Mountains

I live in the Midwest (Minnesota specifically) and I am going to go out west to the rockies to go riding some time this winter. I've gone through a few tours in Colorado where they stick you on an Indy Lite and drive around on trails that wind through the mountains. Every once in a while, you get to go in some powder. What I want to do is rent some nice sleds (like RMX 700's or 800's) and find someone who knows the area, and the real fun places to ride. You guys have any suggestions of where I should go, or maybe an outfitter I should go through? Anybody know a good place to rent sleds for a few days?

Re: Riding in the Mountains

An excellent place to ride is in Cooke City, Montana. It is just outside Yellowstone Park, so elevations can run up to 10,000 feet. I called up there last week, and the Yamaha dealer told me that there was up to five feet of powder, but not much of a base yet, but it has been up in the sixties here lately so it should be starting to set up. There is rentals available from all four manufacturers with a pretty good selection of models from all of them. There is some excellent hill climbing and the trails are pretty decent. I don't know of any outfitters around there, but I'm sure there is some. If I were you I would just take a map and just go around by yourself, it's a lot funner that way.

Re: Riding in the Mountains

Look up snowest.com They have a list of resorts by state with links to them. There are lots of rental places in Montana as well as guides. I agree that riding on your own is fun, but if you have not done a bunch of off trail mountain riding a good guide can show you the best country without getting you into trouble. Once you do some REAL powder riding you'll want to move out here!
Have fun
