What is the compression in a cylinder???

I have a 1992 Polaris Indy 650 RXL. And let me tell you it pulls wheelies like no tomarrow. But since it is reaching around 6800 miles. I really want to check the cylinder presure. So I can see if the pistons, rings,or cylinders are in need of repare. I know a friend with a cylinder preasure gauge but need to know what the correct presure is for a 1992 Polaris Indy 650 RXL. SO if you know what it is or if you know were a web page is I can find it at it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, bean

Re: What is the compression in a cylinder???

im really not sure for that model, but generally, if it is below 100 psi, it is in need of repair

Pull the cylinders off it and check the piston skirts for cracks! This is not uncommon for the 650 once 5000 has been reached. Some go for over 10,000 and some break early but I use 5000 as a guide line. You do not want a piston to break, much cheaper to fix it before it breaks.

Re: What is the compression in a cylinder???

Also when checking compression, make sure all three cylinders are within 5-10% of each other. Two at 120 psi and one at 100 psi is not good either.

Re: What is the compression in a cylinder???

I just borrowed my friends compression tester! I tested all three cylinders and going from left to right this was whe compression. The left cylinder was at 118. The middle cylinder was at 120. And the right cylinder was at 122. I am not sure but think this is alright for being it is a 1992 Polaris Indy 650 RXl that has 6,800 miles on it. If you have any comments please reply. thanks, for all the help. see ya latter, bean

Re: What is the compression in a cylinder???

My 1990 Indy 650 has always had between 118 and 120 in all three.

I have 5000 miles on it and haven't checked for skirt cracks either. Hopefully since I'm running stock RPMs (8200) I won't see skirt problems for a while yet (Friends of mine running pipes and changing the clutching for 8700 rpm have broken skirts many times).
