Heard a rumor...

Heard a rumor that 2 stroke engines are going to be banned within the next few years due to the polution that they cause. Did not hear this from any reliable sources, but have been on the look out. Does anybody know for sure?

Re: Heard a rumor...

that rumor has been flying around for a while. What my understanding is that the mfgs ahave till 2006 (if I remember right) to come up with some solutions. They can't ban what's already there, but can eventually make the mfg's change new sleds, I guess we'll see. I wouldn't lose any sleep over yet.

Re: Heard a rumor...

Well think of it this way. If I am going to get introuble because I am riding a 2 stroke engine, they better have one hell of a sled because they have to catch me first!!!

Re: Heard a rumor...

Last I heard was that two strokes would be banned in the U.S. by 2006. Maybe if the big four start to clean up emmisions and make sleds quieter this won't happen. Redlines fourstrokes are a good start. Polaris has a new fuel injection technology they bought from Mercruiser. It has a fuel injecter in the cylinder that injects the fuel just before the piston hit TDC. It is supposed to clean up two stroke emissions by 80-90%. It'll be really interesting to see how sleds change over the next 10 years.

Re: Heard a rumor...

Look at how they have changed over the past twenty years. We will see the same type of advancements in the next ten. I waited twenty years to be able to climb straight up some of the hills that I climb now on my RMK 700. Can you imagine what a 350 pound 1200 cc ultra long track will will do in the powder with built-in GPS navigation system? Ten years from now you might! And yes, it will probably be a four stroke engine producing 250 hp or more. But the drawback to this is the fact that it will also cost you $25,000 to purchase it. But you will be driving your Ford truck that you spent $100,000 for too. I wonder if I will still be on a three digit cc sled at that point?

Re: Heard a rumor...

I think direct injection may be the solution... they are using them on personnel watercraft and outboards now... we'll see!
