Which Avalanche Beacon?

Several of us in our group are needing to purchase avalanche beacons this year.
Does anyone have any experience with the pros and cons of the different brands?
Also, who would have the best price for your preferred beacon?
Thanks in advance for your responce.

Re: Which Avalanche Beacon?

I used to have an ortovox f2 for skiing, it worked fine. I bought a tracker dts digital last year. In my opinion the digital is the way to go if you are not reall familiar with beacons, it will save time when searching. If you are practiced with them it does not really save time, provided you are good at using them. The digitals will cost a little more but like I said if you are not real experienced they are easier to use. I paid $300 for mine so that should be about the going price. Remember what ever kind you choose to always practice with the people you ride with.

Re: Which Avalanche Beacon?

...And then when you are done practicing.......... practice again.

Try to get your times down as low as you can. Under 5 minutes is a must unless you are looking for a dead body, and hope that it's not you!

be safe!

Re: Which Avalanche Beacon?

I've been using the Ortovox for the past 3 years... it works great, battery life is really good and it's pretty easy to use. The new digitals are nice, but cost more money and do the same thing as the non-digitals. If you do as you should and practice, then either one works fine. Pieps also makes a good unit, a bit more money than the ortovox. SOS also has a good one.

Drop me email, I've got access to a supplier who has a couple of used Ortovox's as well as new SOS units. If you're interested I can check on prices for you. My email is [email protected]
