No reverse!

I have a 1996 Skidoo Touring 380. All of a sudden it makes a bad grinding noise in reverse....and doesn't move. My question is: Can I remove the cover and inspect/fix OR does the entire reverse assemble have to come out? It looks like it does due to the lack of room. BUT I'm hoping there is a better way. Thanks in advance.

There should be some kind of external adjustment on the shifter mechanism that you could try first. Sounds like it is not quite shifting fully into reverse.

If the adjustment doesn't help you can remove the cover and inspect it. Just be prepared for the cup of oil that will drain out when the cover is removed. There are several wearable parts that make up the reverse system. Check the shift fork that slides the gear. One of teh arms may be bent or broken.

But, can this cover be removed without removing the entire reverse assembly first?? It doesn't look like alot of room to work on.

Re: No reverse!

Try that adjustment first 4 sure, I have a 99 mxz 700 (I'm sure the reverse is close to the same design) anyway it sounds like you have an enormous prob but...in the end a few twists on the linkage and I was set! Hope yours goes as easy!
