700 RMK REVERSE

I HAVE HAD NEW GEARS AND CHAIN REPLACED BY DEALER FOR REVERSE. BUT AFTER ONLY A FEW RIDES IT QUIT WORKING AND SOUNDS LIKE IT STRIPPED THE GEAR. I PULLED COVER OFF AND FOUND EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD . PUT IT ALL BACK BUT IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE THE GEARS ARE STRIPPING AND IT WONT ENGAGE. DOES ANYONE HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM ?

Re: 700 RMK REVERSE

Try adjusting the cable for the reverse mechanism at the chaincase. A lot of times this gets a little loose and then reverse can't fully engage, so it just grinds. The first 500 or so miles is where we see this the most on the sleds at work. Our trail touring rentals do it all the time till they get good and broken in (and properly adjusted).

Re: 700 RMK REVERSE

It sounds like the shift lever linkage may be slightly out of adjustment. From the manual for the Gen II chassis:
" Loosen the jam nuts on linkage rod. Turn threaded linkage rod to lengthen or shorten the throw until reverse engages fully. Tighten jam nuts."

I have a 99 RMK with reverse and if the handle is not pulled all the way out then it will grind. It helps to shut the sled off sometimes when you shift because there can be tension put on the gears by the driven clutch and it won't allow it to fully shift into reverse or forward.
