Sheldon Creed Race Report: Round 1, Mickey Thompson / Kal-Gard Stadium Series
Thought this was fitting since Round 2 is right around the corner this weekend.
Sheldon Creed Race Report
Round 1, Mickey Thompson / Kal-Gard Stadium Series presented by SKIN Industries
Exciting Racing, Clean Passes, High Pressure, these are all terms that could describe Sheldon Creed’s amazing performance during the first round of SxS Racing at Perris Automotive Speedway which took place Saturday the 21st of February.
Sheldon Creed entered as #222 in the JR1 Stadium Kart division. The Main featured approximately 20 Karts, and Sheldon was able to pilot his kart right into the lead by lap 2 passing the other competitors clean and on the outside line.
Halfway through the race, Sheldon retained 20 car lengths on the 2nd place driver as he approached a number of Karts in lap traffic and the Competition Yellow around the next corner. On the restart Sheldon again proved his dominance in the JR1 Category taking the lead as he bicycled through the corner. Down the front stretch, the white flag comes out as the evenly matched karts battle it out in a 3 way fight for 1st.
Sheldon the reigning 2008 JR1 Champion claimed the first JR1 Stadium Kart victory of 2009. Celebrating with some burnt rubber, a few victory donuts, and high 5s with his friends and competitors; Sheldon announced from the podium interview, “I got a good start and just took off. I was really trying to pick good lines and it paid off. I have to thanks Troy Johnson from the Fab School, AM Ortega, Gramps, and my Mom & Dad.”
Sheldon earned a 2nd place finish in the JR1 Heat and a 1st place victory in the JR1 Main.
The night of racing did not end there. Sheldon also races a Modified Kart and finished in 3rd place during the practice heat which earned him a second row start in the main.
Sheldon described his strategy as he prepared for the next event. “I want to make the podium and I want to keep my 2008 Modified Stadium Kart Championship Title. To do that I need to start making passes and don’t crash.”
A clean start left Sheldon running strong in 3rd for the first several laps. Reeling in the leaders and make ground allowed Sheldon to get a feel for their driving style and study their moves. Another great start after the competition caution put Sheldon’s Modified Kart right up in the action to take the lead. He capitalized on a leaders mistake taking 2nd position and than battling for 1st. Sheldon and the other Kart exchanged back & forth, when it looked like Sheldon was about to take it for good he was spun out around the corner and ended up facing backwards while nearly the entire field passed by.
Scott Creed explained the race from his point of view. “At the end of the Yellow Flag, I told him, This is it. This is your chance! It looked like it was just the coaching he needed, and maneuvered his Kart through the field of top drivers and pushed the #522 up into the lead. It looks like he spun around as Sheldon was setting up for a tight hair pin turn. Than the Kart stalled… Sheldon finished 11th overall in the Modified Division and we are very proud of him this weekend.”
Sheldon shared his plans for the rest of the season, “we are looking forward and preparing for Round2 of the Mickey Thompson / Kal-Gard Stadium Series. Travis and Ken have put together a great series that brings in all the top & competitive teams from Trophy Kart racing. It is a blast to be out here at Perris Automotive Speedway, any day at the races is a good day!” After Round 2 of M4SX, Sheldon Creed will be heading to Primm Valley Motorsports Complex on April 4-5 for the 1st race of the Lucas Oil Offroad Racing Series.
During the down time, Sheldon Creed will be testing a new Kawasaki powered 450 Fuel Injected Modified Kart designed and built by The Fab School & Troy Johnson.
Sheldon Creed would like to extend his gratitude to A.M. Oretega, Fox racing Shoxs, The Fab School, Kal-Gard, and all the friends family & fans that support Sheldon’s short course racing.
