Dang it! I missed the special stages at Narbonne, France and Castellon, Spain while I was in Barcelona last week. I was really hoping I could see some of it, but fate would not have it.
All I know is that a Spaniard named Jose Roma or Juan Roma won the first special stage on a motorcycle in Narbonne, France. I've checked the website at www.dakar.com
, but they don't have any updates yet on what's been happening.
To console the fact that I missed seeing a part of it, I bought a couple of local off-road mags that had some articles on the race. One of the articles showcased some of the race vehicles entering the race. Most of the vehicles were SUV type rigs and some kind of Renault powered car called a Schlesser.
Another article showcased a Nissan pickup driven by the Spaniard Manuel Plaza and built by an Italian shop called Tecnosport. It uses double coil-overs up front with dual rate Eibach springs and Ohlin shocks.
I haven't tried these websites yet, but the article gave the following web addresses for more internet info:
Well, sorry I couldn't provide any firsthand reports on the race. Maybe one of these days I'll get to see it.
