The September 2000 issue (Vol. 34/No. 9) of Off-Road Magazine (off-roadweb.com) had an article on page 50 of the Paris-Dakar-Cairo 2000 off-road race. The article claims it's like 16 Baja races in a row. I was impressed with the amount and type of terrain the racers had to travel through. One of the interesting incidents I read in the article was how the entire race team had to be airlifted across and over the country of Niger because U.S. spy satellites had detected a group of rebels allegedly preparing a potential terrorist attack on the event in eastern Niger. I also read how the monster big rig support trucks also competed in the event in their own class! One of the coolest pictures in the article was of a race vehicle with the Egyptian pyramids in the background. I only wish the article were longer and had more action pics and pics of the suspension setups the European teams used on their vehicles.
I've never been to an off-road race, much less to that part of the world, but it sounds like quite an adventure to be able to spectate and even more so to be able to participate in such a huge event spanning across the northern tier of the continent through multiple countries. Have you been or participated in any of those rallyes or races?
