Which is better (Ranger vs Commanche)

I want to build a pre-runner / class 7 and I was wonder which would be better to start with a Ranger or a Commanche? I've been looking around and there seems to be better long travel suspensions for a ranger (camburg, donahoe etc) but the commanche has a lot more engine mods available. Right now I'm leaning towards a '93 4.0L 4x4 Ranger but I haven't bought it yet. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Re: Which is better (Ranger vs Commanche)

Try these guys for the Jeep parts.. I just found the site and don't know them first hand.. http://www.jeepspeed.com/ I have seen a few Jeeps out in the dez but the Ranger and the Yotas seem to be "IT" these days.. Buddy of mine runs the Donahoe Ranger front and likes it a lot.. You do need the radius arms,I beams and the coil over mounts to make it work on front and the Plank 4 link in the rear would be nice.. Oh your looking 4x so it would be a little more on cutting the front axle Vs the I beams.. But it is possible.. The D-30 on the Jeep needs reinforcing big time.. Seen many of those break upon landing.. Hmmm, all I have seen are the 2wd models in the dez.. Come to think of it you only need 2wd in whatever one you pick for a pre runner.. 4WD is heavy and only needed if you get stuck.. And you only get stuck when going slow..

Personally I like Toyotas, they can take a huge beating, and keep going. But fords are definately more abundant and a little easier to build. Good luck, and be very prepared to spend $$$$$$!!

You might want to think about ditching the 4wd idea. You'll get a whole lot more bang for your buck with a 2wd twin I beam ranger. And, if you're really worried about the engine, drop in a small block V8.

George.
