Fuel cell in Toyota

I am looking into installing a fuel cell. My truck is a fuel injected v6 Toyota. The problem is making it smog legal. Anyone have experience with this?

What state are you in? If it's CA all you would have to do is make sure the vent goes into some kind of evaporative canister(probably fab up the one on your truck)and make sure the filler neck has that bogus little unleaded thing in it. Iv'e got a Fuel Safe Cell for sale if your'e interested.

Re: Fuel cell in Toyota

There are a ton of fuel cells for sell in jegs. I don't see why they would be illegal.

They won't pass because let fumes out the vent in the cap. Plus the smog guy can't test that kind of cap. Those not from CA probably haven't got a clue as to how bad the smog laws are here. They actually have a machine to test the seal on your gas cap! I have a car that can't be legally smogged because it doesn't show up in their smog books. Thay say it doesn't exist! And if it can't be verified, it can't be passed. Oh, my bust, they said for $2600 I could take it to their main facility in Santa Rosa CA and have a "special" smog done. Oh, and they'll need it for 3 days.... if it passes. No refund.
I built my truck around a "loop-hole" in the CA law. If you build your own frame you can smog it based on the year of the motor, not the body. So of course I "found" a '63 motor.
And I have a standard Jaz 22gal fuel cell with a "bail" cap. And yes you can smell the fumes.

Contact the BAR @ 800-952-5210, they will be able to tell you the rules. Good luck!!
