Don\'t forget to vote!

Remember, it's your franchise. If you're thinking of not voting, may I suggest you take a look at:

Arlington Wreath Project

Then, do your duty and vote your conscience.

Re: Don\'t forget to vote!

Washington and Oregon have gone to Vote by Mail. No polling places left. It's easy, as you don't have to "go" do it, but many people actually voted two - three weeks ago. Being a traditionalist, I have misgivings about that system. I think that everyone should vote on the SAME day. What if there is a revelation about a candidate or an issue a week after you cast your vote?

I'm also proposing hard and fast rules about recounts. In the Governor's race in Washington last time the Republican candidate won the original count by a slim margin. The Demos demanded a recount. The Republican won again. The Demos demanded another recount and then "just happen to find" uncounted ballots from "somewhere under a table" and they won. We the people are not that stupid; ballots just don't get left under a table for a month without anyone realizing it. Solution: Only ONE recount and you can only recount the ballets that made the original count, PERIOD!!!!

Just my 2 cents.

One of my opinions is that if someone is eligible to vote (or even register to vote) and chooses not to, then they have given up the right to complain about their government.

I went one step further than voting and volunteered to work in a polling place. If you have polling places in your community I suggest you consider doing this for the next election. It is a long day, but well worth it for the feeling of doing something to make sure that the voting is done fairly and accurately. My county actually paid the volunteers, so I got a bit more than I would have for a normal shift at work plus vacation pay from work.

Remember, you are choosing a representative that will be making decisions for you without asking your opinion. We need to be looking more at how a candidate makes decisions and looking less at how they feel about one or two issues.

That certainly sounds just a bit too convenient. The reality is that you are right that it doesn't happen under the following conditions: The elections staff is well trained, and highly concientious about their work, and have good procedures defined, and well rested, and adequately paid, and given adequate time to do the work. You take one of those out and then sadly yes it can happen.

Re: Don\'t forget to vote!

Rick, I'd urge you, if interested, to study the 2004 Washington State Gubernatorial race. It was bizarre, to say the least. As my wife and I saw the first recount, then the second and the court fights we were very disappointed. We felt the election had been stolen by the democratic machine in King County.

The County Auditor urged street people to vote and use the King County Auditor's office as their address. It went downhill from there. Dino Rossi was the only candidate to win the vote twice, only to have his election denied.

It really makes me angry when the vote(s) of the people are overturned by lawyers. I have problems believing that the King County Auditors Office just happened to find the votes to overturn the election. One would have to suspend belief when watching the two month ordeal to Gregoire's run up to Governor.

I'd suggest you read:

Don't Count Rossi Out

About the same for me.
I'll bett there are few that are closer to a polling place than me.

Re: Don\'t forget to vote!

Sorry for the Soap Box but it still gauls me that the Demos stole the election and no one was held responsible. In my book, who ever was in charge of King County elections committed voter fraud and should be doing some time in the Big House for the crime. (However long the unelected Governor is in office would be a good start.)

The problem we have in Washington State is that the Seattle area (Puget Sound) has become an overflow for Californians. I apologize to all the Jeep loving Californians now but, most of the transplants have worked hard over the years to "Cali-fornicate" Washington so that we are just as screwed up as the State they came from rather than melding into our society. Due to the mass of people that live in the Seattle area, the rest of the State is pretty much stuck with what ever they vote for. LEVES area of the Eastern Washington, aka The Inland Empire or The Palouse, dose seem to be able to gain a little respect from the power brokers as there is a lot of old money sitting in banks over there. In the Southwestern part of the state (Vancouver ) we are treated like an ugly step sister; we don't have any money and we're far enough south of the power center that nobody up there cares. They would just as soon give us up to Oregon (as we are across the Columbia River from Portland) except for the fact that about 35 cents of every dollar we pay in gas tax down here goes up there to the Seattle area for road work instead of our local roads. Of coarse, Oregon treats us bad too because we aren't part of their state. If you work over there and live in Washington you pay a 9% income tax and get nothing for it in return. (Isn't that taxation without representation? Yes, but that's another soap box.) However if you have an Oregon drivers license and work or shop in Washington you do not pay any taxes. (We don't have an income tax and Oregonians are exempt from having to pay our sales tax.) I know, I know: BOO HOO

Back to my original thought: This is a perfect example of why one should never think that their vote doesn't mater.

Thanks for listening!

Re: Don\'t forget to vote!

I read the article and all I can say is Yikes. I'd be upset too if I lived up there. Sounds like an election office needs a good cleaning.
