i didnt go through all the posts there in that link but.....

thats a pretty commonly accepted fact for theology experts.....what i remember learning is that the early church selected that date because it coincided with the pagan holiday at the same time....this was meant to detract from people celebrating both holidays (and thus retain pagan traditions), and it also made for a smoother transition.....

i dont rember toooo much more since i learned that in HS,... but kinda a neat fact

The date was, in my opinion, a way for the early Catholic church to con the local Pagans into joining up. A quick search will produce evidence that all of "traditional" Christian holy days are in fact co-opted Pagan holy days.
