catostrophic crane failure at Denny\'s

i saw something pretty odd in downtown Roseburg Oregon yesterday morning... i finally got to see what happens when you overload a crane . from the looks of the truck mounted crane i am guessing that it is no more than a 20 ton crane, i couldnt see any numbers on it but it is similar in size to the ones at work . the rating is usually decreased substantially when the jib is extended also the lift rating is with all sections retracted, boom at maximum up angle and lifting over the back or front on most cranes. these guys were flirting with disaster right off the bat, i bet the capacity of the crane was only a few tons at the point where they tried to pick the sign off the post . any ways they hooked on to the sign and proceded to give the sign a little "tug" , the sign lurched upwards, bounced one time and the cranes boom gave way dropping the sign about 20 feet into the center of the roof . the impact blew out several of the large pane glass windows . yes the resturaunt was open when all this took place and luckily enough no one was hurt . thought you might find this interesting....Von Warner

Hey VonWarner, whats happenin?

Wow, another Darwin award recipient? Certainly good nobody got hurt.
Same thing happened here a couple years ago, only it was a huge crane, one of those 10 mph 8 wheel jobbies, with massive outriggers. They had the boom almost horizontal with two guys in a manlift working on the face of a large building....well, the whole works tipped over, crane and all, broke the pads off the outriggers. Both guys were hurt quite badly.

Take 'er easy man.

Gotta love people that don't pay attention to safe loading ... they learn the hard way . From the looks of it , no way that little thing was intended to handle a load like that .....

Roseburg will never surprise me. Been there too
many times LOL.

Hey Von Warner
off topic:
I was looking for your thread with big salmon pics and
it seems to have vanished? Only 4 pages left on general chit chat? Did we have a crash here?
Well I have some Big catfish pics you wanted to see.
Cant find the thread so here goes...
Rednecks in these southern parts call this "noodling"
Reach under logs and such and when the cat takes your arm
you pull it up. Sometimes their so big the redneck becomes the bait....never seen again.... Way it goes
