Being \"raped\" by Insurance....

Hello folks,
Well, I just got back from working on the road for two weeks, and my new insurance policy was waiting for me (it renews May 05), and I almost got sick.
I know that prices go up, but this is insane. A couple a years ago, I was paying $350 per year just for PL&PD for my truck, then it went up to $400, last year it was $506. Fine, I understand rates increase. Life's not always fair.
So a couple months ago, I added a '91 Honda Civic to my '90 truck policy, both with only PL&PD, and the cost of my new policy for both rigs, is going to be $1974 per year . No theft, no fire, no glass, no collision! Nothing, just the bare bones.
They tell me this is the cost of insuring two vehicles that are over 10 years old . I can't believe it, I'm just sick.
I called another place, and they quoted me at $2039, and I got an online quote at $2500.......am I having a nightmare here?
Looks like I'm going to have to take a day off work this week to go Insurance shopping. I don't know how these brokers sleep at night. They should be wearing masks.

Re: Being \"raped\" by Insurance....

Try calling up and insuring just one vehicle. A lot of places are becoming oportunists and raising the rates for people with multiple vehicle coverage so you're actually paying 10-30% more for having two vehicles insured together rather than just one insured at one place and one at another.

My insurance when I moved here was under $250/6 months for PLPD. It had nothing but the bare minimums (no towing, no nothing). They raised it to $320 the next time. The time after that it was up to $440. I called them up and said it'd be cheaper for me to take my business downstate. It's now back to just under $300/6 months which is a deal in my opinion, especially for Michigan which has no cap on how much people can sue each other for.

Full coverage on my Dad's 89 is only ~$300/6 months but he's also over 40.

HOLY CRIPES... That's fawkin' nuts man... I hate insurance anyhow since I consider it legal extortion, especially when you consider how hard you gotta fight, get lawyer, etc to get anything back out of 'em for example... I think it should be illegal personally...

Re: Being \"raped\" by Insurance....

i hated insurance till a week ago...had a big hailstorm and the blazer got hit, but only on the hood, which was already a piece of crap. well, and the roof, but not too bad, and no one sees that. Took it into good ole state farm and they totalled it, wrote me a check for $4300 and gave it a salvage title. I'm happy!!!!

But why is it so much to insure a car over 10 years old? i always thought it was dirt cheap compared to anything else.

I got a new windshield through my insurance once. I didn't even have to pay a deductible.

90K5: do you mean to say that after all that Vortec talk, mother nature actually gave you the chance to pursue it?!? excellent!

what are you planning to get now? i watch ebay pretty closely and you're in the spot to pick up cheap late model trucks... if i ever get tired of the daily driver trail truck thing (not too far off really ) and i'm looking for a newer truck, i'll definitely buy one off eBay and fly to dallas and drive it home... compared to local asking prices, i'd save 4-5 grand on a ~98 Chebby! Re: Being \"raped\" by Insurance....

yeah, aint it great? The thought of a brand new truck just popped into my mind today actually, got the check about a week ago...i'll probably get a 97 or so like i was thinking and have a couple G's in the bank. Theres too many things i dont like about the 2003's...or 99-02's for me to get one...This insurance company has been VERY good to me this year...starting to think i dont need a job...yeah Dallas has a lot of trucks to choose from and most of them are in real good shape. Drove a few the other weekend and there were 2-3 that i am positive had never even seen a dirt road...steering still tight, not a scratch on them, etc. i look on e-bay every now and then, but it seems like a good way to dump a lemon...or something with a salvage title, like my Blazer. Not that the salvage title is that bad in my case, but I am sure thats about as good as it gets for salvage titles.

Re: Being \"raped\" by Insurance....

I pay over $3000 for 2 vehicles with basic coverage. A friend owned a 79 F250 and then bought a newer Mazda millenium and his rate jumped to over $700 monthly. Needless to say he got rid of the truck. Not the smartest thing but who am i to jugde? His insurance is still high as hell along with everyones in Jersey.
