Re: War in Iraq hits home.
I was stationed at Miramar for over 3 years from July 98 to October 01. I had a Captain who flew Cobras part time and ran our shop the rest of the time, they were probably in the same squadron. Captain Thompson, last I heard he was on loan to one of the local college's ROTC programs, or something like that. I was in MWSS-373 ACES, the support squadron. My shop built the aluminum matting runways and installed the arresting gear for damaged aircraft to make arrested landings. They may not be able to stop themselves, but we can. The entire unit is over there. Feels weird. I'm here working my job, driving my truck, talking to friends, and they're over there in gas masks.
People keep asking me if I'm glad to be out of the Marines now. They expect some happy go lucky, "yup".
I'm almost starting to get a kick out of the looks of confusion when I stop and say no.
Just feels weird sometimes.
