Lower gears

I currently have unerneath my truck (International by the way) a dana 44 up front and a dana 60 in the rear. The truck currently has stock 4.1 gears. I plan to go with larger tires so to compensate for the change I want to put lower gears in it. How low can I go with the current carrier? I only really want 4.56's but will I have to go with a different carrier? 4.88's wouldn't be out of the question either.

You can go as low as you want to go with the carrier you have in the D44, but you will have to change the carrier in the D60, you will have to get one for 4.56 and lower.

How much taller are you going on the tires? Unless you are going to be running 38's or taller the 4.88's would bb a little on the low side, you should probably stick with 4.56's.

Thanks HLB3, I didn't want to get the gears and then figure out I needed a carrier. Thanks for the info, now I need to talk to my freind who just parted out his truck and has and has the setup I want for my axles.

Thanks again

If you have 4.10's in the axles already you shouldn't have any probs running up to 33's maybe 35's unless you have an automatic...A four speed if it have a "granny" first gear won't have any problems with the gearing and the tire size. An automatic will really lag with the gearing and the tire size. Hope that will help.

That is why I want lower gears, because I do have an automatic. I am thinking about converting it, but I am not sure about the dimensions of the manual tranny, if I will have to get a new center drivline, mounts ect... I could, it would just take a little time, I first would need to rebuild the heads to stop bending pushrods though (sticking valve drivers side).

If you can find a four speed with the bell housing, that;s half the batle. The automatic and the four speed will interchange as long as you get the four speed out of a late scout or other truck.you should have to get nothing new except clutch and preasure plate( just a good idea). It will bolt directly and you should not have to modify the jack shaft either. As for your sticking valves.....I can't help you there.
