Ok heres waht i have its a 76 jimmy with a 400 SBC and a th400 tranny.. well the tranny went out of it a little over a year ago and its just been sitting... well we have decided to sell it and im wondering how hard it will be to fix and how expensive it will be to fix the tranny. it has lost D and L2, but L1 and Reverse still work... but it sounds like sucking and sloshing fluid when you drive it.. some one once told my dad that the lower reverse clutch or something like that is out of it? does this sound right. i haven't taken the pan off it yet.. if i decide to fix it will i most likey have to drop the whole tranny or could i get to it by just taking the pan off.. any help would be greatly appricated
Try the governor gear. it is cheap and easy to replace. mine did this to me. had st and reverse. that was all. another possibiityis the sprag , but htis is inside and requires a tear down.
oh, if youdon't know where the governor gear is located, it is on the passenger side under the square cover with the round raised center section and held on by 4 bolts. undo this pull out the governor and see if the gear on the end is worn out or not. it cost me 85 cents for a new gear and pin. use a hamer and nail or correct size punch to remove the old pin and install the new one.
do you have to take the pan off.. i looked under the tranny on the passside but i didn't see anything. there is a round dome looking cover on the drivers side that is held in with a wire clip.
yeah im thinking it might be a TH 350.... the pan is square except for a diagonal corner, on the left side looking up at it... if this is a 350 i have a th 350 out of a 76 chevy car..will this possibly fit?
Yeah, that sounds like a TH350, as to if it will fit - I can't say. I'm not familiar with the different tailshafts (length) that could have come in it. Aside for the tailshaft length the trans should fit.
4wd trannys don't have a tail housing (the part the holds the seal) but they DO have tailshafts. Without a tailshaft there is no way to transmit power to the t-case.
my bad. my typing is faster then my brain sometimes
