What would happen if you ran the PVC in the rear hole on the valve cover (258) and the breather in the front. Just realized mine was set up backwards and I burn alot of oil in a new motor. I'll be switching it later this week, just curious to see if there is a reason for where they are placed.
Mine was setup like that too when I bought it. I think the previous owner had done it that way since my engine has so much blowby and the longer hose from the front port to the air cleaner reduced the amount of oil that made it into the air cleaner. Also, if you do have blowby, take both the PCV and the breather hose out of their holes in the cover and, with the engine running, see if more exhaust comes out of one vs the other. On mine, there seemed to more coming out of the rear port.
Good point, I was a little confused why there seemed to be more coming from the back. Anyway, now I've got it setup right with the PCV up front and an oil recovery bottle in the breather line.
Glad I asked. This is starting to make sense now. When I replaced the valve cover gasket I noticed that this cover had some metal cut out of the inside of it (read NO baffles). This is a brand new rebuild, and I burn ALOT of oil. I don't think it's going by my new rings, but could it be that the PVC is pulling oil from the top of the engine, and burning it with the gas? BTW this engine smokes a good bit, but is by no means a smoke generator. Does this make sense?

Without baffles I think your PCV is probably pulling some oil. After all, the rockers throw around a lot of oil and the suction on the PCV is probably enough to draw it up into the manifold.
May want to design your own baffles, my replacement cover's just got some flat 4x2" metal pieces bolted on about 1/2" below the ports. They are boxed on the sides to keep oil from coming over and open on the long ends. They seem to keep most of the splash from getting to the ports, but also allow some oil to pool up there (not a significant amount).
