Can someone tell me if this gear pattern is ok.

After 6 hours, and lots of use of the BFH /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I think I got my ring and pinion set up right and need a little advice from the gear experts. Here's a picture of the pattern. What do ya'll think? Backlash is .007" and I've got 15in-lb of preload on the carrier bearings (within specs for a D44 according to the chart I'm using.)

From what I can tell, it looks like the pattern is way down on the toe, possibly even running off the toe. Also looks like it may be a little high. Your preload sounds good and your backlash is good, but you are going to have to change pinion depth. I'd remove .005 from the pinion depth and see where that gets you. You may need a little more than that. Move the pinion first, then see if you need to swap a little (.003) across the carrier. I know you are probably tired of dealing with this (You did hope you'd be told "that's good enough" right?), but you'll be better off doing it "right" now. Some 4x4 shops would ship the pattern you have now calling it "good enough", I wouldn't.

Well, that would be nice, but I'd rather get it right now than have to re-do it all later. It's just such a pain to get the carrier in and out without a case spreader.
I've actually only taken back apart once (to change backlash)
You say I need to change the pinion depth. I assume if I take a shim out of the pinion, backlash will increase and I'll need to move a little from one side of the carrier to the other? Am I correct there?
I'll post another pic before I put in the crush sleeve and seals.
Thanks a lot!

Ok, let me make sure I understand what I'm doing before I screw something up /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif
I want dark spot (circled in blue) to be in the center of the tooth?
Also, someone said that it was a little high, but if I move it closer to the base of the tooth, the backlash will be too tight. What should I do about that?

hey,
backlash is just a close measurement, the pattern will tell you when your done.
so is this a picture of the drive side or the coast side? which ever, i need to see both sides (and know which one is drive)before i can make guess /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif also are these new or used gears? and which brand? makes a little difference /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Try and get some better pictures of both sides of the ring teeth.
According to the instructions on Randy's web site its more important to make sure the pattern is centered between the face and the flank.
In one of your pictures it looked like the pattern was closer to the face(top) of the tooth which would indicate the pinion was too far away.

From Randy's Installation Kit Instructions
http://www.ring-pinion.com/yukon-instructions.pdf

"Important Pattern Information!
Reading the contact pattern is easy as long as I am not mislead or sidetracked. The only part of the pattern that helps me set the pinion depth correctly is the contact position with regards to the face and flank of the teeth. If the contact pattern appears to be towards the heel or the toe of the ring gear teeth I pay no attention and look only at the pattern position from face to flank. The pattern will also change from heel to toe but in most cases an ideal heel to toe pattern can not be achieved. Trying to obtain a pattern that is centered from heel to toe will usually lead to frustration and a noisy gear set. Even if it does not seem intuitive or reasonable, I am only concerned with the position of the pattern from face to flank. I have found that housing alignment and the position of the pinion bearing bore in the housing affects the pattern from heel to toe and can not be corrected without machine work. A contact pattern that is centered from face to flank always indicates correct pinion depth even if a pattern that is centered from heel to toe can not be obtained. If the contact pattern is towards the face of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too far away from the ring gear. To correct the pattern the pinion needs to be moved towards the ring gear so that it is positioned closer to the ring gear centerline. If the contact pattern is towards the flank of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too close to the ring gear. To correct the pattern the pinion needs to be moved away from the ring gear so that it is positioned farther away from the ring gear centerline.

Used Gear Sets
When setting up a used ring & pinion I am basically concerned with the pattern on the coast side of the ring gear teeth and I pay very little attention to the drive side of the gear teeth. This is true for most used gear sets but in some cases both the coast and drive side should be considered."

Here are some better pics. One thing I'm confused on is Randy's R&P says toe to heel doesn't really matter if face to flank is OK, while some other sources say it needs to be centered toe to heel also.
I think I'm centered from face to flank, but I'm closer to the toe.

looks very close, also the pinion depth looks like it's good to me. i'd install the seal and new nut this disassemble if it's not already installed.....
so, i'd open up the backlash alittle (if the preload is fine, i'd just move a .005 shim from one side to the other,(opening up the backlash, maybe getting closer to .010 backlash) even if it opens it up to more like 11 or 12, still take a pattern on both sides (in about 3 different locations on the gear)
i bet it will look better /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I always understood that if you try to center the pattern heel to toe you will wind up with noisey gears.

From my perspective it looks just about right. I think the pinion may need to be a little deeper, reset the backlash and check the pattern again. Looks like you've done a great job.
