What adapters if any are needed to mate a 904 from an earlier CJ with 300 x/case to a 231 transfer case, The trany to motor match up is NOT in question. I got the tranny for nill and will build it with lock up torque converter to make it a 999 to go in my I6 YJ.
Thanks for any info on this

forget about the 231, I know you have it already, but you'll be much happier if you just got the 300. It's much stronger than the one you have and especially you will need it to be stonger going behind that V8

The 904 to NP or NV 231 may be a bolt on, although not 100% sure. I say this because my 86 XJ has a 904 with the NP 207, which is essentially an early version of the 231.

BTW, what model Jeep is a 78 WJ?

That should have been an SJ not WJ!!!! and Thanks for the response.
As far as putting a 300 in, in place of the 231: I don't want to have to change out the whole drive train, (driver drop to passenger drop) that could get expensive, and I don't have a v-8 in the Jeep and don't intend to put one in. The 231 will do just fine, again thanks for the response

Jim, If the trans you have is out of a CJ it should be a 998 or a 999. It may be lockup already. The 231 will bolt right on to it, but you will have to change the input gear to the one that fits the automatic. 231's came with 4 different input gears depending on which trans they were on. Roger

Thanks for the info. Thats what I was hoping to hear. Are you going to make the Jamboree this year? If so see you there.
