Electrical: No radio reception anymore

A buddy of mine with an 87 wrangler left his lights on and needed a jump. His buddy with an early 90's cherokee helped him out. I don't know all the details, so bear with me. Before the jump start, the radio in the cherokee worked fine. After the jump start, all other electrical components worked fine, and power was going to the radio, but there was no reception--he just got static when tuning to his favorite stations. All the fuses checked out. Any ideas? My buddy is trying to avoid having to buy this guy a new stereo.

Thanks.

No good deed goes unpunished. It is possible to damage electronic components by jumpering batteries. It's only a SLIGHT possibility the radio was damaged by the jump. Surges do occur, and when the hit a radio... some mighty strange things can happen. The only way to know for sure is to have the radio bench tested.

That's means a trip to the repair shop unless you have the gadgets to do the job in your garage. About the only thing I can think of is that if the radio is AM/FM and the FM works and the AM doesn't... the antenna lead is bad or the antenna ain't grounded.

Pull the antenna cable from the antenna jack on the back of the radio and stick in a nice long insulated wire to where the antenna prong goes. You should restore the AM.. then you know the Radio's OK and the antenna's toast. Ah, what the heck, try it anyway!
