Well I finally fot a T18 with the 6.32 gear ratio. Only one problem it has the long input shaft. None you guys would happen to have the short shaft with the correct 17 tooth gear for sale would ya? Or is their any way pull the gear off and put it on a short shaft that I already have?

Thanks
Kevin

why do you want to use the short shaft? i have a t18 from a j series truck.. has the 5" spacer and long input shaft.. and it fits great into my cj7.. shifter comes out right in the middle of the opening.. running a d20 transfer case.. and a d60 rear end..

you have to turn it and count Brownbag thats the only SURE method ive ever trusted

you can buy the shorter (6.5 inch) FORD shaft for not alot of money CJkid, thatll leave you with ALOT more rear driveshaft, and then you can use a standard T150 bellhousing

from what i know.. 3 basic versions..
1-early models had a 1" adapter plate...
2-later models out of full size jeeps had the 5" spacer.. V8 version
3-later models behind I-6's had a shorter adapter.. not sure on length..
all three could mount up to the same bell housing.. amc T-15
i have heard that the difference between the I6 and V8's where this way to keep drive shaft lenghts the same.. dont know if this holds water.. just what i have heard..
t18's that came in cj's from 71-76 had the 4:1 first.. the 77-79 version had the 6:1..
and all other versions that i know of came with the 6:1 first..
was also offered in 80 & 81 j20's.. but the output is different.. was round for the np208.. so its not much good.. since it also had a 9" output shaft..

the inline 6 models had NO adapteron the front, they bolt directly to the bellhousing, all T18s in Jeeps before 1980 had a 1 inch adapter to the dana20/dana18 older versions

the 81-82 J truck T18, actually is pretty desirable. here is why:
the rear adapter is about 5 inches long, itll bolt to a Dana300
so you can remove the FRONT 5 inch adapter, install the Short Ford input shaft and bolt it into a Cj7 or 8 ( still too long for a CJ5) and itll fit just like hte T18 you are running right now Jeepgod! but im suprised you say it fits, most folks consider the resulting rear driveshaft too short

the bad part, hard as heck to find!

we put a jeep long input shaft t-18/dana 20 combo beind a amc401 in my buddys 87 wrangler and he had pleny of rear drive shaft between the dana20 and the dana 60. it was considerably longer than mine when i was still running the stock wheelbase on my jeep.

a wrangler is longer than a CJ 5 right?

thats also ALOT shorter engine than MOST wranglers had from the factory :)

yes.. if you remove that front long shaft.. it is awesome.. but then again.. its rare.. and alot of work and money..

my rear driveshaft is getting ordered on friday.. im running a cv shaft.. and its pretty long.. longer than my stock cj shaft..

yes the wrangler is the same length as the cj.. it would be a tight squeeze in a 5.. but i have tons of room.. my front shaft is waaay long..

i know, i know, i was just saying that in a cj7 or a wrangler the long input shaft will work fine. yes i would agree that it could be considered better to have the short input shaft and the longer rear drive shaft. either will work.

Just to give you guys a little optimism....listen to this:
Alec78CJ and I were at work, doing our usual nothing, looking through the "Truck Trader." In the back they have lots of miscellaneous goodies, including vehicles being parted out. There was a guy parting out a J-truck, so Alec went to investigate. He noticed that the crossmember was not factory and that the original one had been torched off. To his amazement, someone had actually swapped a COMPLETE CJ drivetrain into it, including a CJ T-18. A couple new bearing and seals and a few quarts of new fluid later, a friend and I were bench pressing it into place with the dana 20 bolted up as Alec lined it all up...Keep looking, sometime you find treasures in odd places...by the way, the guy had no idea what he had....i think alec paid him like $200 for it...
