Can someone set me straight about the pros & cons of the two?.... I understand that the Tracker has the stronger drivetrain, larger engine, but probably weighs more?. I live in Arizona, have strict emmisions so no major engine modifications etc. This will be daily transportation / plus minor off-roading and probably not have a lot of modifications. Are there any particular years of either one that are considered "better". I am interested in manual trans, 4 wheel drive, air would be a plus for our summers. I've used the "search" option but have not really found anything to help me. Thanks, Mike

Well, considering what you're plans are, the Sidekick or Tracker would be best for you. Those are IFS while Samurais are solid axle, making the Sidekick more road complaint. Since Samurai's are getting rarer every year, any you don't plan on doing any hard off-roading, its best to leave them to potential off-roader whos are looking for just that 4x4.

Any 1.6L 16v motor'd truck is great. 1.6L 8v motors have less power, and AVOID any 1989 1.3L. FYI, if you ditch the manual tranny, and get a 3spd auto, you can swap the differentials from axles in a manual to the axles in the 3spd and gain lower gearing (4.62:1 to 5.12:1) to correct for larger tires, which are essential even for minor off-roading.

Ya, What Yankee Tim said... the tracker/sidekick would be the best choice for the "light" off-roading that you mention.
Pros:
More room
Better A/C
Better on-road
Already comes with the 1600 16 valve engine
No clicky starter problems
Better seats
Greater availability
Some models have a V-6
2-or-4 Door
Hardtop or soft
That's all I could think of in the short time
