Dana 35c weak?

What makes the Dana 35c such a weak rear end?

Can I upgrade the internals to 4.56 gear ratio and stick with the D35c?

If I can't find a Dana 44, what would be the next best choice for the front?

Thanks for everyone's advice!

Another piece of useful information is that I will not be rock crawling...I plan on doing a lot of mudding? I might climb over some small stuff but not too much of that...just driving around, drinking, and hitting a few mud holes. What gear ratio am I looking for? I will be running higher than 1200 rpm's. Thanks for the help.

The D35 is for the rear....the typical stock front diff is a D30.

The issue is not the internals....they (axles, housing, etc) just happen to be smaller lighter axles...ok for street driving...but when you putting on large tires and taking it off road....they won't cut it for long.

You were doing fine until this....if you just want a mall crawler...fine....
But drinking on the trails? NO NO #1.

If you plan on drinking and driving that jeep (or any other vehicle) on the trail then don't expect a blessing from us. I like my beer too....but only after I'm done for the day.

To be honest, it's kids like you that give the sport a bad rap.

No harm meant/ idiots not allowed

Not to offend anyone, but I was unaware that this was even considered a sport. When I say riding around, drinking, hitting a few mud holes...this all came about because I have a Rhino 660 and several other ATVs that the makers just don't make good enough to suit "kids" like us. I have bought the best of the best and the strongest, and I've got videos to prove that they break even when not in a bind. As for as the drinking goes, this is not going to be treated as a vehicle. It is going to be treated as an oversized ATV for offroad use mainly. Drinking a few beer (offroad) and driving on my back 40 acres is not the same as driving drunk. I think we all know the difference between acting stupid and having a good time. Besides, I don't even know where any Jeep trails are where I live. It's like a recreational/atv-riding/mud nationals kind of thing (which is a very public event where drinking and operating ATVs is allowed). There were 15000 bikes there last year, and yes, like always, there were a few idiots. Didn't mean to offend anyone, but I don't want your so called blessings...I kind of need them.

As for the front Dana 44, is there anything I can substitute?

Bassfrad.... ?

What is up with the jeep in your sig? Sounds like a pretty well put together rig, and there is no mention of a dana 35?
If you can't find a Dana 44 for the front of your Jeep... keep looking. Look under any full size jeep in any junkyard and you will find a D44. Some years are better than others.

I enjoy a cold beer just as much as anyone else... actually I enjoy them very much... I even enjoy them when they are not cold... room temp even...

However I know full well that after any of them, warm cold or otherwise my but does not belong in my jeep. I have far too many hours, and far too much work in my rig to risk damage because I am acting $tuipd. wrose than damage to my rig is the risk of damage to myself, or anyone else. Why risk it. Beers (what ever temp) are best enjoyed after rig time, around the campfire, or BBQ.
Do us all a favor, if you are going to drink and operate your rig... stay away from the public....

STAY AWAY FROM ME...

Any jeep

Do you mean Cherokee when you say fullsize jeep. and what would be the best year models to look for.:goodpost:

Older Cherokee's....do a web search on D44 Flat Top and you will find some good info....I would start here.

This is the 77 Cherokee that I pulled my flat top D44 out of.....The ol' girl looks like she is Mator's girlfriend...

Looks like the Jeep in your Sig is how you would like to build this YJ.

If you are going to run 33" or smaller tires with that futuristic 350V8 I woud swap in a set of Waggy 44's front and rear. The low pinion front will be okay. Make sure you get te wheels off the donor vehicle because the wheel bolt pattern is different from a stock YJ.

If you go bigger look for more axle with that kind of Horsepower!

I would dearly love a dana 44 front for my wagon, but here they are rarer than hens teeth, and if you can find one they run into the high hundreds of dollars.:(
Just have to nurse my 30 front for as long as i can and save my pennies.

Maybe I should fill a container of them and ship them over. There are lots of 4WD full-size pickups around here. A few years ago I bought two front 44s for $75 each, and could have had every one in the yard - probably a dozen more - for that price.

Of course, that's U.S. dollars. Might be 500 New Zealand dollars now. :(

Lol, our economy is not that bad..... $75USD = $95.06NZD. Wonder what shipping would be???????????????????? Last one i saw for sale here was $1500NZD - $1183USD.
Load up a container pal, I'll sell them.... or keep them all for myself....

I'd like to revisit this statement:
As for as the drinking goes, this is not going to be treated as a vehicle. It is going to be treated as an oversized ATV for offroad use mainly. Drinking a few beer (offroad) and driving on my back 40 acres is not the same as driving drunk.
After spending a few years as an EMT, I've spent more time than I'd wished picking up local yokels and tourists who had the same thought.

You may think that one drink ain't gonna kill ya, but I'll beg to differ with you. It dulls your senses, and when you crawl behind the wheel of a 4000lb Jeep you can do some real damage to yourself. All it takes is one second of inattention, dulled sense, diminished thinking and you can roll that Jeep, or worse.

If you choose to drink and drive on your own 40 acres and are hurt, you're just as crippled, or dead, as if you chose to drive on the highway. The only saving grace that I can think of...you may not have taken other's lives with you.

I hope your future doesn't include a LEO visiting your 40 acres only to find out your last words were: "Hey y'all... Look at this!" and trying to explain the events to your loved ones.

Drinking and vehicles have no place together... ever... period!

Drinking

While others are replying back with usefull info some are still worring about one freaking statement about 1000 post ago. I think its because you know nothing about Jeeps so you use this forum for entertainment. Well how about joining a chat line it would probably entertain you better, or LET IT GO. It will be ok really let it go. If it is nothing about jeeps keep it to your self.:D

Hmm. Thinking seriously here - what would it cost to ship a container over? Jeff and I could spend a few months filling one. And how many could you reasonably sell? Even a small container would probably hold a couple hundred. Keep in mind that they'd be junkyard axles with no guarantee. You would certainly have to replace brake parts and seals at the minimum.

Jim, there would be lucky to be a thousand Wranglers in the country. A thousand in a container would enable me to happily keep using the loud pedal with scant regard for noise pollution. however, i have put it out there with another chap, and over the next week ill see who i can get interested. Honestly though, i cant see there being a need for more than 50.

Quite a few especially if you would count the j trucks, same width I think. When I first started we cut them out and set them aside, people would ask for a certian axle and it wouls sit in my shop for months until I got mad and threw it on the trailer for scrap. the only thing I have kept is 1 wagie fr/rear, 1 hp44 5 lug, 1 60 rear and an 8.8. I had a perfect dana 30 hp for 3 months with 4 phone numbers all were coming on saturday, then sunday none ever showed. I finally pitched it and a diffrent guy stopped by and asked "you ever get any dana 30 hp axles" I just said NO

Is there a market in NZ and AUS for Jeep parts?

I've a friend who's son is in California. He spent some time in Europe and found that VW Buss and Type II parts are getting rarer and more expensive. When he came back to the US he started a small company. He buys used VW's from all over the US and ships them back to Europe in containers. Once in Europe, he has a crew strip, clean, catalog and store the parts for sale. They're sold all over Europe for a small fortune

Oh, and Bassfrad:

I'm not about getting into a pissing contest with you... it's you're life. :censored:

As for me knowing anything about Jeeps... I don't know near as much as I'd like to know about them and I'm always up for learning more. I'll be more than happy the hear anything of value that you've got to say on Jeeps that will show me the error of my ways.

1) OK, i'm a newb here, but shouldnt the whole drink driving thing be opened in another thread somewhere?

2) The last North Island Jeep wrecker recently got out of them, too many variations in one model, let alone trying to cater to all the models. So aside from the odd onle that pops up in wreckers yards, the consumer is left at the mercy of the Jeep/Chrysler dealerships. And they're not afraid of charging. Thier only interest is in the new vehicles and the only peole that drive them are ones with plenty of coin. There's one chap here who imports stuff to order for Wranglers, but even then, for example, is selling Rugged Ridge replace-a-tops for $1200.00NZD, that i can order myself direct from RR and have it on my doorstep for $670.00NZD ex US. Theres no-one here who is a major OR minor distributor that is willing to give the consumer a fair go. I'm picking over there the Wrangler for example are a dime a dozen, here, on the whole, theyre treated as a status symbol. I'm just and average Joe with a mortgage and family (and two Wranglers) who happens to love Jeep. There would be a market for Jeep used parts here, esp Dana 44 fronts (most TJ's in NZ came with factory dana 44 rears), suspension components, things like the sound bars ($500.00 odd new) heavy duty skid plates etc etc.....

As long as you don't do too many burn outs at the mall to impress the high school whores you should be fine.

How old are you?

Between this post and the 44/9" post it sounds like you need a role model. Find a local jeep or 4x4 club that doesn't mind you tagging along and sharing some info with you.
