Not always. As usual, I had the granddaughter over the weekend. Saturday morning, we went to a park with a large sand lot. We stayed there for a while, went to get lunch, brought it back and ate at one of the picnic tables. She played in the sand for a while longer.
We came home and she played while I put the new bicycle I'd bought for her together. She rode it for over an hour then she ran and played in the grassy field across from the house then rode the bicycle some more.
I fed her dinner. Since she didn't finish her pickle, I knew she was full so I was going to wait for dessert. She watched television for a little bit and then went upstairs to play in her room. After a while I didn't hear her so I went up to check and ask her if she was ready for some strawberries and ice cream. There she was in the middle of my bed, sound asleep. A four-year old put herself to bed at 6:30PM. She didn't wake up until 7:30 the next morning.
Only bad thing was the capri length jeans she had on had cuffs. Cuffs + sand lot + went to bed with her clothes on, my bed was full of sand.

If it's quiet for more than a few minutes with my little "ball of fire" I get worried and have to check. She's always reading or something good, but IT STILL SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME. (if you know what I mean)
Better safe than sorry.
DD, I know what you mean. Was visiting with a friend, took her kid out and we played all day long...When we got back to my friends house, we started cooking dinner...and the kid got quiet...to quiet...walked back to her room...and this is what we found:
