What Is This Part?

This part is right after the coil, in-line negative (green -) to the module. Call me ignorant but what purpose does it serve?. I found it "again" when I was removing all of my wiring from the looms trying to find a break in my coil primary wire.

Good input there, Jeepete.
Another fine contribution to the bbs and the ultimate answer to this guys question...
------------------------------

Now, if we can get over the background noise...

Green wire is usually used for Ignition coil primary side ground and tach hookups when used in the engine harness.

Power comes from the key switch, goes through the coil, and exits the coil through a green wire.
That wire connects to the Ignition Module.
The module makes or breaks the circuit to charge or discharge (Fire) the coil.

Most people think the switching for the ignition coil is done on the positive side, but it's actually the coil 'Ground' that is interrupted to make the coil 'Fire'.

A quick inspection of the Haynes manual engine wiring diagram shows 16 Ga. Dark Green wire from ignition coil to ignition module, with a 'Y' branch feeding the Tachometer.
The 16 Ga. Dark Green Wire turns into 16 Ga. Violet under dash after it passes through the fire wall connector.

Thanks for the input. I understand how the system works and where the green wire comes from and goes, I was wondering what this factory harness connection was. You too might think it's a tach hookup? It is less than a foot from the coil. I am considering replacing some wiring and didn't want to remove this and find out that it was something special.

If this was a 4 banger it makes sense since the Tach was hooked up to the Green lead but if it's a 6 cylinder the tach is usually hooked to the (+) side.

But hey, my 84 harness has both circuits in it also. Go figure.

I don't have a factory manual for 84. Mine only covers to '79.

My Haynes manual doesn't show any differance between 4/6/8 wiring for the igniton.

Here is the page...

It even lists the length as 6 inches from the coil connector.
Like I say on the image, I'm 99% sure this is the connector he's showing...

I kind of wonder if that's an extention for the I-6 engines...
Remember it's longer to the coil on an I-6 that a V-8.
V-8 had them right on top of the engine, and I-6 hung them way down on the side of the engine...
Wonder if this is the 'Extention' to make it to the remote coil for the I-6?

Anyway, it's marked in my Haynes diagram as being either 6" or 8" so I think that might be the one...

Good looking wire & connector for an '84!
Wish even 3 inches of my '86 FSJ wiring looked that good under the hood!
Mine looks like it's been on fire and someone beat it out with a muddy sledge hammer.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Thanks, y'all. That makes good sense. I was all fired up to replace any spliced or connected wires in the harness since my broken coil wire fiasco. I'll probably just leave this one alone - it ain't broke so I won't fix it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
