I am going to buy a TJ or a CJ. The problem is, I can't decide which one I want. Help me out and let me know what you think is better...a Jeep Wrangler TJ or a CJ-7...
TJ or CJ?????????????

Anybody with money can buy a TJ. It takes an intensely unique degree of obsession, compulsion, and tolerance to own a running condition CJ for longer than a week. But both of them will get your money. Either up front or down the road. Count on that.

I guess that's why I'll never own a TJ. The CJs getting my money now and I'm already intensely obsessed.

I would go with the CJ...but then I am alittle nutz. Why only a CJ or TJ...why not a yj? If you get a 90's Yj you can still get a good clean roadworthy jeep with a fuel injected motor. Got somethin against sqyare headlights bub? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif just kidding. see? nutz!
anyway good luck.

How else would I vote.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It does take something different and extra to go with a CJ... but then again I just don't know any better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I vote tj for practical reasons. Simply the tj suspension is out of the box superior to either a yj or cj, they are all fuel injected no specific year problems, Ya they are not a cool as the cj's and I actualy enjoy working on my CJ more than My tj, with the exception of my front end problem I have not had a major repair on the tj after wheeling it for 6 years. While I know people who have wheeled there cj's for 10 years with no major problems they are like me laying under it at least once a week if for no other reason than to see what they can take apart this week!!

If you are mechanicaly inclined and already on your way in the wheeling world go CJ if you want a capable but infinately buildable platform relativly trouble free setup then go TJ or be like me buy a TJ and a early cj5 I never have to look far for something to do.

how about this question... What do you want it for? What are your plans for it, what do you want to do with it? What kinda time do you have to invest in it? what kinda funds do you have to put to it? then make a decision.

I persoanlly prefer CJ, but that's not to say you would.

I couldn't vote YJ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Suspension is definitely an issue. I did a spring lift but want to convert to coils eventually $$$
TJ's already have better suspension. I think YJ though 'cus the square headlights just make it look meaner /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/AR15firing.gif

Round headlights look weak /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/neener.gif

Of course, it depends on what you're looking to do with it, but if you want to build a Jeep to wheel...

Get a YJ, 90+, fuel injection, larger rear roll bar (93+?).
Convert the front end to a CJ grill and hood (and fenders if you so choose)
Conver the dash to a CJ dash.

Over a CJ, you get:

a better frame
a better motor
a better suspension
a newer jeep with likely less rust.

Lots of suspension options for the YJ.

And when you're done nobody will tell it didn't start out as a CJ.

In my opinion, a TJ is too complicated, with air bags, too many suspension parts, and too much plastic froo froo.

A YJ from that era will have the improvements you'll want, and a simple leaf spring suspension will perform great, and can be built easily.

Just my $0.02

As noted above...what will be your primary purpose?
First...lets look at the differences...

CJ - Leaf spring suspension...carborated engine...82-86 has the wonderful D300 xfer case...unlikly you will find one with A/C...great platform to work with.
YJ - Leaf spring suspension...carborated engine early years (up to 93 I think) and then FI. Basically the same as the CJ but more 'aminities' (like A/C) in the cab....but I belive t-cases and tranny's were a bit lacking.
TJ - A YJ with Coil suspension.

Mostly off road? And you have the time and money? CJ...less stuff to get in the way....
If it's going to be a daily driver...and you want more creature comforts...got TJ. While it might cost you more to lift the TJ, you can't beat it for overall ride and articulation.

Now, if you really want a good vehicle to start with...find a TJ Rubicon. D44 front and rear, lockers and 4:1 xfer case. Out of the box, they out perform many 'built' CJ's.

as cool as a cj is, in my opinion a tj makes a better daily driver and is a better offroad platform especially if you can find one with a d44 rear. they are tough as hell in stock form and if modified CORRECTLY are even better. electronics can be a headache, but fuel injection is the greatest.

simple vs. advanced
