I've got a 1980 cj7 with the original lapbelt that looks rough & need to replace it...personally I would like to retrofit a modern style 'lap plus over the shoulder' style belt on both sides, has anyone done this?

thats basically what I'm looking for, but 80' cj7's do not have a factory mount for the shoulder harness part of the belt on the rollbar...I supose I could drill & tap the rollbar, but I'm worried that won't be strong enough...

I'd think drilling the rollbar all the way thru, using a sleeve (weld it in if you'd like), and cap the backside with a fender washer & nut (hell, Grade8 if you'll feel safer?) would be more than sufficient... If not completely mistaken, that's exactly the way they came from factory...

that sounds like a (expletive) good idea, I'll take pictures & post them, figure about a month (jeep's going in the shop for a clutch & some gas tank work, neither of which I feel good about doing myself)

(the person who installed the replacement gas tank did a horrible job, leaks at the slightest incline out the non-exsistant overflow line & poorly installed filler neck)

p.s. the mc2100 carb swap made a huge difference, the old weber was definitly running *way* too rich

thanks again for your help, maybe some day well meet on a ride, anyone live near GA?

Check EBay...lotsa good options there....from 5-point Simpsons to other of lesser quality......just depands on what you want and how much you want to pay. I picked up a pair of Simpson 5-point Y types last week for 52.50 including shipping

I have just done this.
I got a retractable lap/shoulder belt from JCW and drilled the roll bar to fit a through bolt (tight)

They come with fairly explict instructions

The holes came out just below the bars that are angled back.
I do not feel that the overall intregerty of the roll system was comprimised by much at that point.

I also made brackets to make the retractors point up instead of at an angle.
the retractor lock work's great at the changed angle.
I feel comfortable that they will function as needed with this setup.

What you are describing is exactly what I did to put TJ belts in my CJ7 which has a YJ rollbar (confused yet?).

I drilled a 3/4" hole through the front side only. Then I had (for $10 at a local machine shop) 2 "bungs" made of 3/4" OD, and the correct inner thread (I think 7/16" but not sure). It is deep enough to sit all the way into the tube, and then stick out 1/3" for welding to the face.

Works perfect. Let me know if you want a picture, but I think it explains itself.

FYI - TJ seatbelts are plentiful and cheap on Ebay, and are much softer than older or replacement belts. The 3-point belt I bought from 4wd hardware was WAAAYYYYY to sensitive to locking up with the slightest movement and were like a saw on my neck, so that's why I went to TJ belts (limited edition red Tomb Raider belts in my case).

the seats do recline.. I put washers under the front legs and recline them to where ever I want!
pnut.. good question. I've revised this a bit since this pic, but you get the idea.
the seats are so comfy.. you really can wheel all day without feeling half the back strain.. they are hard to get in and out of though.
