Shaved D60\'s Hold Less Gear Oil?

Im planning on getting a 60 for the rear of my TJ. Either from Currie, Tera, or Dynatrac, but I heard that if you get the axle shaved, then its not good to drive on the road alot because it cant hold as much gear oil. Obviously a Pro Rock 60 has been changed alot, but I thought that you can just get the bottom shaved off a standard D60 without messing with the inside of the carrier too much? I do alot of daily driving, so I wanted to make sure before I purchased anything.

if its a "stock" D60 from a full size truck (low pinion) and you shave the bottom (outside) you can still run the same amount of gear oil in it as before....i think what your talking about is a high pinion D60, they have problems getting oil up to the pinion bearing so they might burn out as a DD
...but i think the companies have fixed that problem by using a bigger bearing and better oil slinger.....what ever diff you go with you might want to look at using hi-tach in with the reg. gear oil....hi-tach sticks to the metal and helps with "dry" start-ups.

when most folks shave an axle, they simply grind the bottom a bit so there are no edges to catch on things. If you get a true shaved aftermarket axle the bottom of the axle has been cut off and they do hold a BIT less fluid. They also have shaved ring gears inside them. However, there are currently NO aftermarket companies that are still selling shaved axle housings...al of them are now offering custom housings that use a full size ring gear
Whoever told you that a shaved axle shouldn't be driven on the road a lot is fulla poo. look at things logically... you are putting a 1 ton axle into a JEEP. even a shaved d-60 holds almost twice the gear lube as a d-35.
properly set up gears will have no problem withstanding prolonged highway trips.
now then.... if you realy think that you are going to have a jeep with 1 ton axles and drive it to and from the trails..well...there aren't many out there that do. I have done it, but I don't have as much fun when I do..it just sucks to worry about breakage...\
if this is your only vehicle, buy a tow rig before you get wild with these type of mods.
I have done a lot of daily driving on my shaved dynatrac rear 60 and I have found that I would rather not drive it all the time. Every time you put any torque on metal it fatigues it.. eventually anything will break from even normal useage. ..
I see you are looking at putting a v-8 and a rear 60 into the jeep now...
don't forget about new driveshafts, tranny, transfercase...then remember that 36's are a bit on the small side to run 60's...even high clearance 60's.
I guess I'm just wondering WHAT you want to do with the jeep... if you want to tackle tellico and drive it home...get ready to spend about $25000.....pro rock 60's for a tj are about $11000 with gears and ARB's and 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern
