I've got an '86 4Runner and I'm wondering how much prerunning it can take in stock form? I've got it airborn several times and I didn't seem to break anything. Is there anything I can do to make it hold up to hard landings?I've got 31-11.50 TRXUS's on it and I put 2" shackle lift on the rear to level it out .Thanks-Tom
Gotta be careful about hard landings in a stock truck (no matter which stock truck it is).
Anyway, for the Toyota if you don't plan on doing much in the way of making it a full blown desert pre-runner, I would consider at the very least getting a control-arm mount truss. I think you can still get those from Downey.
The rear of the control arm mounts are not trussed. When you bounce it hard (say, jumping) you end up spreading that rear part of the control arm mounts. Eventually it will wreak havoc on your alignment, and may require "frame straightening".
Deff get the truss as the other guy suggested, idler arm brace. Ive seen dual FOX 2" resivoir shocks on stock armed trucks before. A 2.5" is preferable but will not fit with stock arms.
Total Chaos makes a nice set of wider upper and lower arms for it and will be like a night and day diff if setup correctly. You can run a 2.5" shock with upgraded torsion bars and still keep 4wd using T 100 axles. The best is to ditch the drive axles and run coils on the 2.5" shocks.
I thought they didnt switch to ifs on the 4rnrs until 87, but im probably wrong. But if your going to run it stock id go with reinforcing it, run some new torsions and some res. shocks. my.02
def. go with new torson bars and some res. shocks with out a dout.
