4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

i am running 32's on the D30 and D35 with 3.55's. i don't plan on going larger than 33's with the D35. i am going to re-gear next week and am still toying with which gear to swap. i don't use 5th gear anymore and can't crawl slow enough on the trails i run. do you think the 4.56's will be too low for good highway speed(70) or will the 4.10's be too high for decent crawling?

would 4.56's be stepping beyond the realm of the D35's capabilities? i will be running the same trac lok in rear and a true trac in front- so no locker, just LSD's. was just thinking the pinion gears might be getting too small with the 4.56's.

sorry for the LAME ? but just thought maybe someone has been this route also.

thanks,steve

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

Well, to put things in perspective I run 4.56s with 36" tires and at about 65mph the rpms are up around 3500. This is with a 4spd tranny though - if you use 5th you might be OK.

Since you don't plan on running more than 33s, I'd go with 4.10s. Do you plan on upgrading your axles at some point? If so, look into a low range kit for your t-case instead of wasting money on gears for axles you're going to change out anyways.

up-grading axles? always in the mix. you know the routine! it never ends. the tera low is around a grand. i don't see an application with the peugeot- yes a need another tranny too some day! my gear swap with the true trac in front will be around $1500. i would like to get some enjoyment out of these axles for a while longer before the big axle swap. thanks for the response.

That seems like a lot of money for a gear swap. Even if you figure $400 for gears+install kit, $300 for the LS, and $200 ea. axle to install gears then you're looking at $1100. You could buy a pair of locked D60s for the $1500 that they want!

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

I'd like to know where I could get 2 locked 60's for $1500; I think that's a little optimistic. You can get at least a grand around here for a stock front 60; I've been cruising junkyards for three years and have yet to find one.

I would go with 4.56's with a five speed. When I ran 33's it would have been fine with a five speed; it sucked with the T-18. I just needed that little bit of overdrive that the fifth gear would give. Top speed was ~60 mph on the highway and that is at 3000 rpm which is about the limit on my 258. It's all better now, though. I stepped up to 35's and now can go 65 /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. And for trips over an hour, I got a trailer /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

4.56's with 33's and a 5 speed, I run around 2400 rpms at 60 mph. A good combo.

Steve,
this is just my oppinion but before you "dump" money into regearing the your 35 check around to see if you can get say an 8.8 out of an exploder. I remember reading on the AZVJC buliten board that somebody like last week got one out a 1999 for about $100 bones. That would give you the stronger axle plus 4.10 stock in the rear (if you fint the right one) then you would only need to regear the front. This is the route I have looked at and seams feasable if you can find 8.8 @ a good price.
Also here is a web page for you to look at
http://home.off-road.com/~lifted/home.html
got to techinical and then tire size, rpm finder. This should give you a pretty acurate idea of what gears to go with
All IMHO of course

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

I have seen at least 3 different f/r combos for $1500 or less on other boards that are more or less local to my area.

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

well i knew the axle swap would be brought up:)

i guess i will take the road many do and waste $ on the 35.

yeah $1500 is a lot of cash. he broke it down:
$239 front gears
$239 rear gears
$45 front bearings
$45 rear bearings
$30 oil/LSD add
$$439 front true trac
$200 labor rear axle
$225 labor front axle

i can get the gears/LSD for cheaper from drivetrain direct or west coast. this guy said that would be ok but he threatened that if i didn't get everything and he had to shut down and order parts, he would have to charge me "down time".

this town SUCKS for jeep mods! i do all my own work except this gear swap. damn, wish i could do it. everyone needs to make a buck i know but to profit on the parts $ucks.

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

He didn't tell you that you'd need different carriers either - that may render your rear LS unusable b/c of a carrier change.
Here's some prices:

Drivetrain Direct:
F/R gears and master install kit (bearings, shims, etc) $419

www.lockright.com
F/R Lock-Rights - $500

Figure $100 total for carriers.

Add $400 for labor. If he wants more $$$ to install the lockers, tell him to pound sand. They take no longer to put in than regular spider gears. You're now at $1,419 not including gear oil ($20 - no LSD additive needed). $1,439 for the whole setup. You're still under $1500, AND you have a more capable wheeling rig, AND there should be no down-time - you have all the parts you need.

Hope this helps - I don't want to see you get taken for a ride.

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

the carrier break in the D35 is 3.55 and up, so i don't need another carrier there but the D30 break is 3.73 and up so you are right on that one. i don't think i would go with a lock right, rather put a detroit in the rear. an ARB in the front would be the hot set-up but no $$$. i just talked to a guy that has a shop and he didn't talk highly of the detroit true trac for the front- even though it has worm gears he said they just don't hold up. he recommends the spicer power lok if i wanted an LSD up front. he really said to get an ARB up front. he has been a supplier of ARB for years and knows them up and down.

his price for gears, ARB F&R, labor= $3500-$4000...yeah right like i got that much. he seems very knowledgeable.

his basic gear swap- parts and labor= $1300-$1600

well, the saga continues.

i posted an add on the local jeep club board and just got a response. he will install for $150 an axle and get good prices on parts. i will talk to him.

thanks,steve

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

I was quoted up to $3,000.00 for doing gears and a rear locker for my jeep. I ordered the gears from DTD for $419.00, a carrier from them as well approx $45.00, and a detroit locker (no spin) approx $475.00. I brought them in the rearend housing all stripped down and cleaned by me, they charged $180.00 to set up the gears. I drove the jeep in with no front axles in place and they also charged $180.00 to set up the front. While I had the axles out I changed the u joints and ball joints. I also brought them in the rear axles and they put new bearings on. Can't remember the exact cost, but the bearings were surprisingly expensive (say $50.00 a piece). Came in well under budget, and the DTD install kit had everythign the shop needed, I didn't pay a dime more than quoted $185.00 except for taxes. And this shop has and deserves a good reputation. He opened up on a Saturday mornign to resurface my flywheel when I pulled my motor. Of course I bought my clutch and associated parts from him.

Re: 4.10\'s or 4.56\'s

I have the 4.56's the 5-spd, and 33's.. I love the combo.. I still run the dana 35.. I question my choice when I did this.. but I have done everything in missouri without a mishap... Have broke a dana 30 axle shaft though.. I would prob swap out the axle though if I had to do it again, before I invest money in the 35

4in currie lift, 4.56's, true trac, and 33's.. yeah it's a start!
