ASA needs your help!!

The following was sent out by the ASA:

Dear Fellow Duner,

We complained loud and clear to the BLM about the “signage” for the closed areas as being woefully inadequate. We caused havoc for them by our mass e-mailings and snail mail to them. That was not our plan but we got their attention.

Are we in favor of closures? No. Will we abide by them? Yes. Is possible to abide by this one? No - the boundaries are not clearly marked.

What we need are clear, well-marked boundaries. The problem is that the BLM is understaffed and overwhelmed because of the new closures.

Last summer, the CBD successfully argued that only large closures work because they need buffer zones. You can bet that they will try to use this argument again when they try to get these closures made permanent. We can make this argument false and take the wind right out of their sails.

The ASA is calling for you to help mark the boundaries this Sunday morning, (1/14/01) the day after the trash cleanup. This is a golden opportunity to show the world that we honor the closures, and that there is no need to close more. In fact, we will use this to argue for less closures. The Fish and Wildlife Service will see this and be more inclined to believe that smaller closures will, in fact, work.

This is the best opportunity we will have to demonstrate the kind of people we really are. We can demonstrate that once a boundary is adequately marked, we stay out.

The ASA has made the commitment to fight closure in every legal way. We feel that the dune community can get a lot of mileage from an action like this. As our biologists and lawyers fight the battle from those directions, we can fight it from this. It can only do wonders for our image and help us in the end. Once again, we will get their attention.

We will be staging this effort in 3 areas, all at 9 AM Sunday morning, 1/14/01. ALL are California time (10 AM AZ time)

1) Gecko Ranger Station - look for Jerry Seaver, Mark Harms, Grant George and Vince Brunasso.

2) Buttercup - Be at the fee machine at the Grey's Well exit and ask around for Gregg McConnell

3) Gordon's Well fee machine - look for a red Ford XTRA cab 4X4 pickup - that will be Rick Cole.

Please respond to: [email protected] if you are planning to participate in this vital effort.
