Kia Sephia

I know a lot of you probably drive the more popular Sportage but I have some questions about my 1.8 DOHC 97 Sephia. I usually reside on the Toyota truck forum but I also have this car. On my Toyota I have made adjustments to my timing and AFM and gotten a free flow exhaust. Are these mods that can be made to a Kia? My friend has an 01 Ranger and he can't even adjust his timing. Is this the case with Kia? This is a short forum and I did read most of the post but saw nothing on Power mods or upgrades. I know it may sound stupid to mod a Kia but sometimes it's fun to run from light to light with Hondas, Nissans and Toy's. Makes 'em mad when they see that litle KIA emblem on the back of the trunk. Gotta pass the Kia. BTW this is my wifes daily driver so I can't get to crazy and most of my extra cash goes into my truck but I would appreciate any insight people may have. Also, has any one had to replace their timeing belt/chain? What is the recommeded milage to change this before it breaks? Is it a PITA since the motor is sideways? I did mine on my truck but that was a little more accessable. Thank you very much.
