Winch Cable

What size cable should I have on my Ramsey Re8000, winch. It has a capacity of 150' of 5/16". I bought it used with 3/8", but the drum is not full, about 60'. I have a bunch of 1/4" galvanized cable, but I think that is too weak(Ramsey 6000's come with 1/4"). I'm pulling my 4300lb. Toyota, or what ever is stuck. Do you think that 1/4" would stand up to a little winching or should I just save my pennies and buy 5/16"?

Re: Winch Cable

Save your money and your headache and buy the 5/16" cable. it is not worth the worry of maiming someone or yourself if the cable breaks. Go to and check them out. I got 150' of 5/16" cable w/ the clevis hook for my Warn Upright for less than $95 shipped. They supply the military with cable for the winches on Hummers so it is all top notch stuff. Check them out.

Re: Winch Cable

You are nuts if you use 1/4" on an 8000 lb. winch.

Re: Winch Cable

No kidding. It'll cost a lot more for the lawyer to defend you than the 3/8" cable when the person next to you is killed from it snapping.

I'd go 3/8" in diameter, even 5/16" is marginal on a heavy pull, you should be able to fit about 125' of it on there.
