HELP-V8 swap, T18, Short or Long shaft, Drive Shaf

I am going to swap an AMC 360 in to a CJ 7 using a T 18 and Dana 300 transfer case. The T 18 came out of a J 10 pickup, so it has the long input shaft. Right now, I have the I6 and T5 transmission and the Dana 300. I was wondering if anyone knew if I used the T 18 without changing the input shaft, could I use the original drive shafts? If I switched the input shaft to the short shaft, could I use the use the original drive shafts? Thanks for your help.

Re: HELP-V8 swap, T18, Short or Long shaft, Drive Shaf

I'm not 100% positive, I'm thinking the CJ version T-18 had the shortest input shaft (about 7 1/2") of the all the different versions Jeep T-18's used. I seem to remember the AMC bellhousing is about 7 1/4" or something real close to it. I think it would be easier to find a CJ version T-18 input shaft or have the long input shaft you have now shortened. If I remember correctly, the T-18 combined with a Dana 300 adapter is about 15 1/4" the length ot the T-5 with a Dana 300 adapter is about 15 1/8".
Happy Holidays

Re: HELP-V8 swap, T18, Short or Long shaft, Drive Shaf

swap a Ford T18 ( 2wd or 4wd) input shaft its 6.5 inches, it requires a special pilot bushing from AA ( or have one machined pretty easily) its $30

and with a T150 bellhousing its the shortest T18 you can bolt behind a AMCV8, Ford T18s are CHEAP in junkyards since you can buy a CORE, and have alot of spares after you use the input shaft, and frobnt bearinbg retainer/

Ozark
When you use the term " Input Shaft " are you actually referring to the clutch shaft in this case ? I`m reading it that way because your mentioning the pilot bushing. I always though the input shaft was the shaft coming out of the rear of the transmission going into the transfer case .Hey , I was wrong once before .

Re: HELP-V8 swap, T18, Short or Long shaft, Drive Shaf

either way your probably screwed...
first of all, a dana 300 doesnt bolt to a t-18 withpout a $$$$ adapter(with the exception of the 1980 scout d-300).. the dana 20 does though and thats what you probably have if there is a x-fer case bolted to the tranny now.
the short t-18 behind a v-8 will be shorter than a 258/t-5 set up and the v-8/ long t-18 will be longer than what you have now.
the long t-18 is 5" longer than the shortie
theres really only one way to tell for sure about driveshafts... and thats to put the stuff in and see what you need.

Zilla

clutch shaft=input shaft

the shaft from the tranny to the transfer case is the mainshaft in most cases.
its coupled to the input shaft in teh Tcase thats connected to the knee bone...

Happy holidays everybody!

I seem to remember seeing a J truck in the junk yard with a T-18 and a np208(?) behind it. Don't all the NP/NV cases share the same 6-bolt circular pattern?

Re: HELP-V8 swap, T18, Short or Long shaft, Drive Shaf

True story. Advance Adapters has a kit to attach a Dana 300 to a T-18. It runs about $500. A Dana 20 WILL bolt up, as will a Scout Dana 300. Those are RARE, available only in 1980.
