Re: Mog axles whats the scoop?

Portals!!!!!

They have gear boxes at the ends of the axles which raise the centerline of the axle above that of the wheel. This makes the lowest point (diff) about equal with where the tube on a standard axle is.

Also, by having gearing in the ends of the axles, they can get massively low gear ratios without using weak lower pinion gears.

Re: Mog axles whats the scoop?

ok ... where are the brakes? do they have the same problem as hummers (the brake pads wear out fast?) just woundering? I doubt I'll need that much beef under my CJ.

Here's a pic of the 'mog rear axle on Dan Dunaway's Jeepster. His website has a lot more pics of the axles.

Re: Mog axles whats the scoop?

No bucks i see your are in Marquette, how do you like the wheeling up there? I was up there visiting nmu and hit a couple of the trails across from marquette Mt. in a stock xj and they were sweet, the side trails looked like the wheeling out there does get kinda crazy. Is there some crazy wheeling up there? seemed like a lot of it.

As for Mog axles i think they also have factory cable lockers and gears in the 6-7:1 neighbor hood. Sycho15 is serously considering swapping them under his yj. They run in the neighborhood of 2 grand a piece but are ready to go under a jeep w/ some spring pads and shock brackets. I guess rear steer is pretty easy to rig up on these axles, somthing like the diff can be swapped around.

Re: Mog axles whats the scoop?

Mog portal, weak portal housings, even mild amounts of HP causes deflection in the reduction gears because the weak housing. To much power and the portal housing crack. Unmogs are very underpowered, thats a reason the trans/tcase(one piece) has so many gear combos.

Jeeper99xj:

Don't want to get O/T, so I'll post a reply as a separate thread.

As for the last pic posted, isn't there also a D60 hybrid w/Hummer outers?

A lot of options if you got the bucks. I don't, obviously, which is why I'm NoBucks.
