Heim joints don\'t take grease

OK, so I got this heim joint crossover steering setup from SRC (http://www.jeepxtremes.com) and it has heim joints. We installed the system, and the heim joints won't take grease. They will on the bench, but not when installed. Any thoughts? I'd hate to have to take the whole thing apart everytime we have to grease. But, if thats the deal, thats the deal. There are four fittings, the pitman arm, two on the passenger knuckle & one on the drivers knuckle.

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

do they have the high pressure fittings? The ones that we use on the airplanes are alittle touchy, but once the needle seats tight, there is no problem.

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

Here is their description of the heim joints they use:

* heim joints are heavy duty w/static strength over 40,000 lbs!!! w/zerk fittings

So are you saying that maybe after greasing them once they will accept grease better? (I hope so )

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

Just a shot in the dark here Mel, but depending on the orientation of the zerks in relation to where the tires are putting pressure... It could be not allowing the grease to get through the zerk. Try jacking both tires off the ground then greasing it. Might also try increasing/decreasing load until you get something that works.

Let us know, I like that setup and if you have good/bad things to say, it may influence my decision....

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

Mel are you using a air powered grease gun. I had some heim joints on a go gart we built a couple of years ago. Well i couldnt grease them by hand but the air gun sure did the job. Plus they are much easier to use. Also Them may wear a little bit right away and then take grease and stop wearing.

Can someone please bring me a hammer my 33's just ate my fender again. Damn i need more lift.

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

Is the heim so tight that no air can escape when you try to pump grease in? I have seen some joints on farm implements (new farm implements) that are so tight that grease won't go in. We put a little use on the machine and no problems after that. Also my dad has a few peices of equipment that can only be greased with the item in question in certain positions. If you greased them when you installed them I would run them for a while and try it again with the grease-gun.

Re: Heim joints don\'t take grease

Mel, I just put a new end on my grease gun. It is a self holding sideways fitting. It seems to hold on to the nipple tighter and it makes it so you don't need 3 hands. LOL I like it, was only 5$.

You had to do what to fit those little tires?
I'm sure glad I own a CJ!
